Wieder um liegen vor mir, theuerer Freund, liebreiche Zeilen von Ihnen, die ich zu beantworten eile. Hofrath v. Martius schreibt mir bei letzter Post "Empfangen Sie also hierfür meine aufrichtigste Danksagung, welche ich hoffe zur That machen zu können indem ich die Angelegenheit Ihrer beiden Freunde, Dr Haast u Mr Thwaites zu der meinigen mache. Der Irrthum über Travers sociale Stellung betrübt mich; doch ist es ein unschuldiges Versehen, das doch jeder leicht übersehen sollte. Ich erfuhr es von Travers selbst aber erst nachdem die Bücher schon gebunden; so konnte ichs nicht ändern. Dr Hooker schrieb mit letzter Post, er habe das Manual gesandt indessen ist es nicht angekommen. Selbstverständlich werden seine darin entwickelten Abgrenzungen der Arten weit von meiner Behandlung derselben abweichen. Greifen sie doch an Ort u Stelle eine Gattung wie

klammere mich nicht an meine Thesen unabführbar an, wie es leider aus falschem Stolz so manche engherzige Geister in der Wissenschaft thun, die sich nicht zu dem Freimuth eines Robert Peel erheben können.

Fast bedauere ich es, dass ich alle Ihre neuen Arten Dr Hooker überliess; nur schien es in Ihrem Interesse zu sein, da Hooker mehr für Sie wirken kann wie vielleicht ich; sonst war ich nicht verpflichtet dazu, denn ich geniesse wenig Grossmuth nicht einmal immer Gerechtigkeit in Kew u habe mich nicht ohne Bitterkeit gegen J. Hooker & Bentham darüber ausgesprochen. Als Freund kann ich Ihnen sagen, dass meine Sympathie für diese Herrn ganz dahin geschwunden ist.

Dr Berndt ist ein wackerer Deutscher, ehrenhaft u kenntnissreich, vielleicht etwas mehr als gerade immer nothwendig auf eigenen Vortheil bedacht, was man aber einem Familienvater ohne Vermögen zum Besten anrechnen muss.

Sie sind glorreich in Ihrem schönen des neuen so vollem Lande beschäftigt. Möge Ihnen die Kraft u Gesundheit ungeschmälert verbleiben um glanzvoll auf Ihrem Pfade weiter zu dringen!

which I hope to be able to turn into deed by making the matter of your two friends Dr Haast and Mr Thwaites my own. More details about this later. I shall first of all approach President Carus.' 'Rest assured, that I will make every effort concerning the persons recommended by you.'

M had proposed Haast and G.H.K. Thwaites for membership of the 'Leopoldina' (the Academia Caesarea Leopoldino-Carolina Naturae Curiosorum) and asked Martius to support their nominations; see M to C. von Martius, 25 July 1863 (first request for Haast), 25 July 1864 (for Thwaites and Haast). By the time M wrote the present letter, Haast had already been elected to the Leopoldina on 2 November 1864; see. H. F. von Haast (1948), pp. 346-8.

Thus writes the venerable old gentleman, who was raised to hereditary nobility, when he returned from Brasil in glory many years before my birth! He is the most gifted and noble of all the natural scientists of the present era in Germany and perhaps the one with the most comprehensive and deepest knowledge, one of the very few, whom the world will ever be able to judge worthy to stand beside Linnaeus. Thus your concern now enjoys illustrious patronage. — Martius would be President,

Please thank your wife for her kindness in giving me the maternal photo of herself with her lovely child. In the possession of such a clever and high-minded partner through life you will look forward to a joyful future, while you enjoy the happiness of the present.

The error about Travers' social position distresses me; but it was an innocent mistake, that anyone should be able to overlook easily. I heard of it from Travers himself, but only after the books had already been bound, so I could do nothing about it.

M had described W. T. L. Travers as a Judge of the Supreme Court in his dedication of B64.10.02. Travers had in fact been a District Judge in Nelson when Haast first met him in the late 1850s but soon left to set up a legal practice in Canterbury (see H. F. von Haast (1948), pp. 43, 250).

Dr Hooker wrote with the last mail that he had sent the Manual,

but it has not arrived. Of course his limits of species as developed in it will diverge widely from my treatment of these. Just take any genus right there on the spot, as for instance

That way you will best be able to judge, and I will gladly be prepared to accept correction and tear myself loose from any mistaken ideas I have held, if I were given valid proof to the contrary. I certainly do not irrevocably cling to my theses, as unfortunately so many narrow-minded spirits in the science do out of false pride, who cannot rise to the honesty of a Robert Peel.

I almost regret, that I left all of your new plants to Dr Hooker; it seemed to me that would be in your best interest, as Hooker can do more for you than perhaps I. But apart from that I was not under any obligation, because I enjoy little enough generosity and often not even justice from Kew, and have expressed myself about that to J. Hooker and Bentham not without bitterness. As a friend I can tell you, that any sympathy for these gentlemen has totally evaporated.

Dr Berndt is an upright German, honourable and knowledgeable, perhaps sometimes a little more than absolutely necessary after his own advantage, but for the father of a family and without fortune one must count that rather a virtue.
