Editors’ citations
1
Last updated 21June 2023.
The list of sources given here provides publication details of items cited by the
editors in their notes to letters and in other apparatus files. Citations to items
in notes to letters not yet available on-line may be included: citations are added
to the list when first added to the notes during all editing stages. As additional
letters are edited and mounted on-line, this list will be updated.
Some titles were published in fascicles, the first of which may have been issued before
the date on the title page. In this listing, the dates on title pages are preferred,
as this is how they are catalogued in most general, and in some specialist, libraries.
Where it is important to understand the date of actual publication in interpreting
a letter in the
Correspondence, known dates of publication of the relevant fascicle(s) or journal parts are given
in the notes to that letter, often using the data in
TL2.
Thus the date of publication of the work given in this list should not be interpreted
as the date of publication of any botanical name therein.
The transliteration of Cyrillic names is given as spelling used for the author in
the source being cited, with cross references to the spelling most frequently used
in the botanical literature, usually that which is given in the International Plant
Name Index as the expansion of the ‘standard form’ used to indicate authorship of
names. Some authors published under more than one transliteration, for example, Turczaninow,
Turczaninoff, Tourczanow, the details of all of which are listed here under Turczaninow,
to which the cross references lead. In the notes to the letters, citations are given
to the transliteration used, also mentioning the transliteration under which the details
will be found, such as ‘Turczaninoff [Turczaninow] (1863)’.
Places of publication are given using English names, for example, Vindobona is given
as Vienna.
Where available, links are provided to the URL of a copy of those items that have
been digitised. Preference has been given to sites using persistent links, such as
doi,
permalink, or
handle
URLs, and to links not behind a paywall, although if access is not available elsewhere
links to sites commonly available through institutional or personal subscription are
provided, for example to
JSTOR
and
ProQuest. Links to the
HathiTrust Digital Library
are provided only if at the time of linking the item is available without geographical
restriction. In a small number of cases, links have been provided to publicly available
versions placed by authors in depositories; such links are provided on the understanding
that authors have deposited items within the copyright or contractual arrangements
they have with their publishers. If evidence of inappropriate deposit is found, these
links will be removed.
For multi-volume works persistent links to a web-page with internal links to all volumes
is preferred, otherwise the URL of the first volume of the set is given from which
it is usually possible to find other volumes on the same site. In those cases where
all volumes are not available on the same site, links are given to the volume cited
in the notes to the letters. For items in journals or edited works preferred links
are to the page where the text cited starts; where this is not possible a link to
the whole item is used, and navigation tools on the site can be used to find the start
of the article or chapter. Similarly, the only available links to newspapers are often
to the relevant page, rather than directly to the item being cited.
There are some apparent idiosyncrasies in the sequence of items by an author within
a year, for example Tate (1882) was published in December 1882, whereas Tate (1882a)
and Tate (1882b) were published in January 1882, in the preceding volume of the journal.
The sequence is a result of progressive editing of batches of the letters, and the
addition of new citations in the order in which they were found.
Neither the Mueller Correspondence Project nor the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria
is responsible for the stability or persistence of the links provided.
