Theuerster Freund.

Es war meine Absicht Ihnen einen langen Brief in Erwiderung Ihrer letzten wie immer freundlichen Zeilen zu senden, finde aber inmitten literarischer Arbeiten für den Präsidenten der Linnéischen Gesellschaft, dass die Poststunde heranrückte, ohne mir Musse zu lassen. So bitte ich Sie denn um Entschuldigung, dass die Karte der Alpen, welche vor mehr denn einem Jahr gedruckt wurde Ihnen erst jetzt zugeht. Mir ist als hätte ich selbige früher gesandt, ich weiss aber nicht mehr auf welchem Wege, da ich über die Privat Vertheilungen nicht Buch führe u selbige so mannichfaltiger

mannigfaltiger.

Art sind, dass ich alles darauf Bezügliche in meinem Gedächtnis chaotisch verwirrt finde. Es gelang mir nicht, wie ich im Januar d. Jahres den Barkly range zum ersten mal erstieg, meinen Weg weiter zum Mt Haast zu bahnen. Die Zeit war zu kurz, um Pferde durch die subalpinen Gestrüppe zu hauen. Ich denke aber in einer neuen Tour vom Westen dahin die Triangulation zu vollenden.

Für die prachtvolle Karte, welche Sie mir gesandt meinen innigen Dank. Ich werde selbigen mit meinen besten Kleinoden hegen.

Ein Herausgeber einer illustrirten Zeitung in Melbourne bat mich um etwaige neuseeländische Landschaftsskizzen. Haben Sie Einiges der Art abzugeben, so können Sie ihn u mich durch die Edition hier erfreuen. Ein paar erklärende Bemerkungen machen selbige um so willkommener.

Wie schade, dass Sie Ihre Reise postponirten zu uns! Jedoch hoffe ich Ihnen doch früher oder später die Freundeshand zu schütteln. Diesen Sommer komme ich schwerlich jedoch zu Ihnen.

Bitte empfehlen Sie mich dem generösen Hr Travers. Sagen Sie bitte, wodurch kann ich ihn erfeuen? Soll ich ihm meine 4 Bände über austr. Pflanzen senden?

Legen Sie Ihre Capitalien des wissenschaftl Vereins in Staatssicherheit an u gebrauchen Sie nur die Zinsen . Sie stiften dann ein dauerndes Werk, wofür Ihnen die Nachwelt Dank wissen wird.

Dass Sie so freundlichen Antheil nehmen an meinen neuen Errungenschaften erhöht für mich den Werth meiner neuen Würden. Als einem wirkenden Mann der Wissenschaft u einem Beschützer derselben habe ich den Kaiser Frankreichs stets sehr hoch gestellt. Es ist nicht Adelstand aber die dänische Ritter würde,

welche mir vom König Friedrich VII, meinem früheren Landesherrn ertheilt wurde. Der Orden des Dannebrogs stammt aus der Zeit der Kreuz Züge, ist daher einer der ältesten in Existenz. Bei den jetzigen intimen Verhältnissen der Höfe Dänemarks u Englands ist mir diese Auszeichnung als früherer Scandinavier von umso höherer Bedeutung.

An v. Martius habe ich mein Gesuch mit letzter Post wiederholt. Als Präsident vermag er Alles unter den Leopoldinern, u kein würdigeres Mitglied könnte der Akademie eingereiht werden wie Sie,

I find that the time for the mail has approached, not leaving me time to spare. I apologise that the map of the alps,

which was printed more than a year ago, is sent to you only now . I feel as if I had sent it before, but cannot remember by which method. As I do not keep records of the private distributions, and as they are so varied, I find that everything concerning them becomes chaotically confused in my memory. I did not succeed in forcing my way to Mt Haast,

when I ascended the Barkly Range for the first time in January. Time was too short to get horses through the subalpine scrub. I intend to complete the triangulation during a new tour, approaching from the West.

My sincere thanks for the magnificent map you sent me.

I shall cherish it with my greatest treasures.

The editor of an illustrated paper in Melbourne asked me for possible sketches of New Zealand landscapes. If you have anything suitable to pass on, you would please him and me by publishing it here.

A few explanatory notes would make it all the more welcome.

What a pity that you are postponing your voyage here! But I hope that sooner or later I shall be able to shake your hand. But this summer I am unlikely to get to you.

Please commend me to the generous Mr Travers. Please tell me, with what can I give him some pleasure? Should I send him my 4 volumes on Australian plants?

Probably B62.03.03 and the first three volumes of the Fragmenta.

Invest the capital of your scientific society in secure Government bonds and use only the interest . With that you establish a permanent endowment and posterity will thank you for it.

That you take such a friendly interest in my latest attainments only increases the value of these honours for me. I have always held the Emperor of France in high esteem as an active man of science and as its patron.

M was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour on 6 January 1863, see certificate issued by the Order (in this edition as 63-01-06a); see also M to J. Haast, 27 June 1863.

It is not nobility but a Danish knighthood that I received from my former sovereign Friedrich VII.

i.e. Frederick VII, King of Denmark. M received the Dannebrog Order on 23 April 1863.

The Order of the Dannebrog goes back to the time of the crusades and is thus one of the oldest in existence. As a former Scandinavian this honour has an even greater significance for me with the current intimate relations between the Courts of Denmark and England.

I have repeated my application to von Martius with the last mail.

M proposed Haast as a member of the Leopoldina. See M to C. von Martius, 25 July 1863, and M to C. von Martius, 12 August 1863; also M to J. Haast, 28 July 1863.

As President he can achieve anything in the Leopoldina, and the Academy could not add a more worthy member to its number than you.
