Genehmigen Sie die innigsten Glückwünsche, welche ich Ihnen zu Ihrer Vermählung darbringe. Möge ungestörte Glückseligkeit und stete Gesundheit Sie u. Ihre theuere Gattin auf Ihrem künftigen Lebenspfade begleiten. Ich bin ganz stolz darauf, dass Sie mich würdig fanden, inmitten der ersten Feier der Vermählung die kostbaren Augenblicke Ihrer Gemahlin zu entziehen und mich mit dem ersten Brief, der das freudige Ereignis meldet, zu beglücken. Nicht weniger bin ich entzückt bei dem Gedanken, Sie u Ihre Gemahlin nun bald in Melbourne begrüssen zu können. Ich hoffe, dass der Zeitraum Ihres Aufenthalts nicht ein zu kurzer sein wird. Mich werden Sie nicht verheiratet finden, da ich wohl erst, ehe ich mich beständig häuslich fessele, auf ein Jahr Europa besuchen werde.
Aber wie soll ich es Ihnen und namentlich Herrn Travers danken, auf eine so aufopfernde Weise meinem Wunsch, die Chatham Inseln in Bezug auf ihre Vegetation kennen zu lernen, entsprochen zu haben? Diese Expedition wird den Namen Travers aber auch gefeiert in der Pflanzenkunde u in andern Zweigen des Naturwissens machen. — Auf eins möchte ich im Vertrauen zuvorderst Ihre Aufmerksamkeit lenken, nämlich dass der junge Travers einen Anhaltspunkt haben sollte an den Missionären oder den dort residirenden Beamten, um als unerfahrenener Mensch nicht unter die Eingeborenen zu gerathen. Der Vater wird in dieser Beziehung wohl die nothwendigen Schritte treffen. Ich werde einige Bemerkungen für den jungen Travers niederschreiben, die als Winke beim Sammeln nützlich sein möchten.
Nun noch einmal meinen innigen Dank für Ihre aufopfernde Güte und die besten Glückwünsche für Sie u Ihre liebe Gemahlin von ihren innigen Freunde

Ich werde nicht verfehlen, die 2 ersten Bände der Fragmenta an Ihr Institut zu senden. Welche schönen Materialien wird die Reise nach den Chatham Inseln für Ihre transactions liefern.
Mit letzter Post kam ein genialer u liebevoller Brief von dem ehrwürdigen v. Martius; beantwortend habe ich Sie bei dem Präsident in die Leopoldina als Candidat eingeführt.

Permit me to offer you the sincerest congratulations on your wedding.

Haast married Mary Dobson on 25 June 1863.
May undisturbed happiness and constant good health accompany you and your dear bride on life's future paths. I am very proud that you found me worthy in the midst of the first celebrations of your marriage to withdraw some precious moments from your bride to delight me with the first letter announcing the happy event. I am no less delighted at the thought of being able to welcome you and your wife soon here in Melbourne. I hope that the period of your stay will not be too short. You will not find me married, as I shall probably first visit Europe for a year, before I tie myself down to permanent domesticity.
But how can I thank you, and especially Mr Travers, for meeting my wish to get to know the vegetation of the Chatham Islands in such an unselfish manner? This expedition is going to make the name of Travers one celebrated in botanical science and in other branches of natural science. — There is one thing I want to draw your attention to in confidence, and that is that the young Travers

should have some guidance from the missionaries or the officials residing there, so that as an inexperienced young man he does not fall among the natives there. His father will probably take the necessary steps in this regard. I will write down a few hints for young Travers that may be useful when collecting.
Now once more my sincere thanks for your unselfish kindness and the best congratulatory wishes for you and your bride from your sincere friend

I shall not fail to send the first two volumes of my Fragmenta to your Institute. What beautiful material this voyage to the Chatham Islands is going to produce for your Transactions.
The last mail brought me a genial and affectionate letter from the venerable von Martius. In my reply
