'Ack the letter from the Govt Botanist to me and say it shall have my consideration. But I do not see any impropriety in the Secretary for Agriculture conveying the Minister’s instructions to any officer in the Department. The Secrty of Railways conveys the Ministers views to the Professional head (Mr Higinbotham) the Engineer in Chief. | Mr Wallis's attention is directed to the complaint I made before I went to N Zealand that the distribution of the [...] for Public Gardens had not been made. What steps if any have been taken? | When will the report on the Botanic Gardens be ready. | J.J.C. [J. J. Casey] 28.2.73'.
'All applications are in, duly scheduled and ready to bring before the Board. | I shall be prepared to submit report on Botanical Garden so soon as I receive from Mr Ghlinn his promised account of their early history. | A.R.W. [A. R. Wallis] 1/3/73.'For Wallis’s report, see A. Wallis to J. Casey, 20 March 1873 (in this edition as M73.03.20).
Melbourne botanic Garden,
13/2/73.
Sir
In compliance with the request, conveyed through your communication of the 8th instant,
2
Letter not found; but see M to D. Gillies, 8 February 1873. See also M to D. Gillies, 12 February 1873, and M to J. Casey, 6 February 1873, to which the first part of Casey's annotation refers.
I have the honor to transmit to you a return of the nursery plants, entrusted by me to Gardeners Coller and Schneider. The number of plants of each species is given under its specific appellation, when more than one or a few plants exist of one kind. Where however only single specimens or a few of a sort are extant, they have been grouped together and are given collectively, for brevity's sake and in order that not unnecessarily time may be sacrificed by extending the return to a tedious length.
Unpotted seedlings or cuttings are given simply under their specific name, as it is quite uncertain what share of them will succeed even under the most cautious and attentive treatment. Besides such very young plants would not be available for early use in final transplantation.
Should however on any point of this return an extended information be required, then I shall not fail to furnish it, whenever I learn what additional information may be desired. As I have no information whatever of the purpose, for which the return of my nursery plants is required, I thought it best to submit it in its present form. It is hardly necessary to point out, that the large single plants and the solitary select and tender plants are required for the maintenance of the Conservatory collections through the different seasons, and that solitary or few plants of hardy species are needed for each of the three scientific divisions of the outdoor culture, namely: 1, the systematic class ground, 2, the experimental industrial ground, and 3, the extensive geographic ground. Moreover a large number of hardy plants of showy character are of course constantly in demand for flowerbeds, tasteful grouping or interspersion and various ornamentations of the area of the botanic Garden itself.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller,
Director botanic Garden.
The honorable Duncan Gillies &c
Acting Minister of the Lands Department
Melbourne Botanic Garden
Nursery near the lake.

M was inconsistent in the use of this name: he used both this and Pinus deodara in BB95.08.04, p. 383 as the main entry, and P. deodara in a discussion under P. gerardiana, p. 388, and in the index to vernacular names, under Cedar of Lebanon.
