Hochverehrter Herr Professor.

Esteemed Professor,
My friend, Baron von Bodin, has again contributed £2 to the North-African expedition
Fund, which I transmit herewith.
2
M had been collecting among the German community in Australia for the 'Heuglin Fund',
instituted by Petermann to finance the German expedition into Central Africa under
Theodor von Heuglin in search of Eduard Vogel and to explore unknown territory. Bodin
has not been further identified; for an earlier donation by him, see M to A. Petermann,
23 February 1862 (in this edition as 62-02-23a).
In a case, which I had to send to the venerable Sir William Hooker this morning,
I have dispatched a number of statistical documents to you, obtained for me by Mr
Wadsworth from the private secretary's office of the Governor, also on behalf of our
Royal Society all the volumes we have published to date.
In my last letter I enclosed a bill of exchange for £10,
which I ask you to accept as a contribution on my part to the North African expedition
enterprise.
3
See M to W. Hooker, 27 January 1864 (in this edition as 64-01-27h).
4
Transactions of the Royal Society of Victoria. See request by Petermann in his letter to M, 16 May 1863.
5
The bill of exchange was enclosed with M to A Petermann, 24 November 1864 (in this edition as 63-11-24a), not M to A. Petermann, 25 December 1863 (in this edition as 63-12-25a).
Always ready to serve your fine institute and the other scientific institutes of your
country, I remain
your
very devoted friend
Ferd. Mueller.
The case to Sir William is dispatched by the famous ship Great Britain and could arrive in Kew by the end of March, where your enclosure will be passed
on to Mr Trübner.
