An diesem Tage, edler Freund, u. gerade beim Postabgang trifft die Zuschrift hier ein, durch welche die Gnade Ihres hehren Königs mich in den Orden des Nordsterns aufnimmt. Diese hohe Ehrenbezeugung, welche ich sicher Ihrer Fürsprache verdanke, hat mich sehr gerührt, und ich lege besonders hohen Werth darauf, da ja Linné diesen Orden ebenfalls trug.

Es bleibt mir keine Zeit die Zuschfrift Sr. Excellenz des Ordens-Kanzlers diesmal zu beantworten, u. so muss ich den Ausspruch meines Dankes bis zur nächsten Post verschieben

Mag die Vorsehung mir Kraft u Gesundheit verleihen, um mich dankbar zu bezeigen.

Hoffentlich kamen die Baumfarne lebend an. — Sollte dies unglücklicher Weise nicht der Fall gewesen sein, so werde ich eine neue Zusendung veranstalten. Ich habe Ihnen doch noch eine riesige zu senden.

Today, noble friend, and just as the mail is leaving, the news arrived here that the graciousness of your august King has admitted me into the Order of the North Star.

See Carl XV, King of Sweden and Norway, to M, 9 December 1871 (in this ediion as 71-12-09a).

This high distinction, which I surely owe to your intercession, has touched me deeply, and I particularly value it because Linnaeus also wore this Order.

There is no time left to reply to the letter from His Excellency, the Chancellor of the Order, so I must delay the expression of my gratitude until the next mail.

May Providence give me strength and health to prove my gratitude .

I hope the tree ferns arrived alive.

M shipped 7 trunks of Dicksonia antarctica to Agardh by Anglesey; see M to J. Agardh, 15 July 1871 and 25 July 1871.

If by misfortune that should not be the case, I shall organize a new sending. I still have to send you a giant .
