Sie haben in einer so edlen Weise sich der Aufsuchung Leichhardts angenommen, dass
es ein Verstoss gegen Pflicht wäre, nicht über alle die Vorgänge des Unternehmens
Ihnen sofort Bericht zu erstatten. Diesmal fällt es aber zu meinem traurigen Loose
Ihnen den unerwarteten Tod des muthigen jungen u talentvollen Anführers zu melden.
Die bedruckten Blätter, welche ich beifüge, werden das Einzelne dieser traurigen Begebenheit
vor Ihre Augen führen, dann aber auch das Hoffnungsvolle, das sich daran knüpft. Es
wird vor dem Postabgang nicht zur Entscheidung kommen, wie das Unternehmen weiter
durchgeführt werden wird, indessen denke ich dass schon in nächster Woche die nöthige
Schritte für die Reorganisation der Parthie getroffen sein werden. Inzwischen habe
ich gestern im Auftrage der Damen Depeschen an den einstweiligen Befehlshaber gesandt
mit der Weisung sich für weitere Operationen fertig zu halten. Es gebricht mir an
Zeit des Schreibens. Ich bin auch mehr ein Mann des Handels
als Discoursirens. Mit nächster Post werde ich mehr berichten.
Sie wünschten Selaginellen. Das Australland ist arm daran. Ausser Selaginella Preissiana
u Sel. uliginosa kenne ich aus Australien nur die beigeführte Art von der Nordostküste,
S. concinna nahe stehend.
Die Körner Samen der Karri Eucalypte möchten einen schönen Baum für Ihre Gartenhäuser
geben. E. colossea wird 400' hoch, steht daher in Grösse wohl keinem Baum der Erde
nach ausser der
. Diese Eucalypte wächst aber mit ungleich grösserer Geschwindigkeit.
Bentham hat für den 3 Band der Flora Australiens 134 Arten beibehalten, von denen
49 von mir beschrieben wurden. Da die Compositen in den 3 Band aufgenommen werden
sollen, wird selbiger nicht vor Ende des Jahres erscheinen.

You have espoused the search for Leichhardt in such a noble manner, that it would
be an offence against duty not to inform you immediately on all the news concerning
the enterprise.
But this time it is my sad fate to have to report to you the unexpected death of
the courageous, young, and talented leader.
The enclosed printed pages
will show you the details of this sad event, but also the hope that is connected
with it. No decision will have been made before the mail departs on how the enterprise
is to be continued; however, I think that already next week the necessary steps for
the reorganisation of the party will have been taken. Meanwhile I have yesterday sent
telegrams on behalf of the ladies to the temporary commander
with the direction to hold himself in readiness for further operations. I lack the
time for writing. I am also more a man of action than of discourse. I shall report
more with the next mail.
You requested Selaginella. Australia is very poor in it. Apart from
and S. uliginosa I only know the introduced species in Australia from the northeast coast, which is
close to S. concinna.
The seed grains of the Karri eucalypt should grow into a beautiful tree for your glasshouses.
E. colossea grows to 400 feet high, thus is not second to any other tree in the world as to height
except for the
. But this eucalypt grows incomparably faster.
Bentham retained 134 species for the third volume of the Flora of Australia,
49 of these were described by me. As the
are to be included in the third volume, it will not be published before the end of
the year. I am reducing

, and I have significantly extended and reorganised the limits of the genera in the
Gnaphaloideae.
