Es war mir sehr erfreulich, geehrter Herr Holtze, von Ihnen wieder brieflich zu hören, denn — obwohl ich von Ihrer Überladung mit Amts Pflichten wusste, — glaubte oder fürchtete ich doch schon, dass Sie erkrankt seien. Ihrem Wunsche gemäss habe ich sofort an meinen Universitäts Freund Krichauff in Ihrem Interesse geschrieben, u. ihn aufgefordert, sich für die Absicht des Ministers, Ihnen £800 jährlich für Löhne zu Gebot zu stellen, auch bei Hr Basedow u Hr Homburg zu verwenden. Letzterer besuchte mich neulich hier, u nahm ich die Gelegenheit wahr, Ihre vortreffliche Verwaltung des dortigen Gartens zu rühmen.

Besten Dank für die von Ihnen in Aussicht gestellten Samen der Euc. miniata. Nach Ihrer Notiz will ich diese Art nun auch in die neue erweiterte Ausgabe der "Select plants" aufnehmen. Giebt sie auch Kino? Der Wuchs ist wohl langsam. Euc. phoenicea kommt wohl nicht so weit westlich vor. Die Farbe der Blumen ist dieselbe wie bei E. miniata.

Frische Wurzel-Pflanzen des sollen Ihnen mit nächster Post zugehen. Im Falle der erste Versuch des Sendens mislingt kann solcher ja erneut werden.

Wenn sich eine gute Gelgenheit bietet, würde ich Ihnen rathen, dem Gouverneur von Fiji, Sir John Thurston, auch frische Samen von zu senden, denn S. Excellenz interessirt sich practisch für tropische Nutz-Culturen, hat mich erst neulich hier über solche berathen, und im Lauf der Jahre manches Seltene von mir erhalten, so dass er Ihnen auch recht viel senden könnte, u zwar recht Brauchbares.

Frische Samen von Acacia Arabica werden mir recht willkommen sein zum Vertheilen an Correspondenten im fernen Innern. Da hier im Süden keine Samen reift, muss ich mich auch auf Sie verlassen, um neuen Vorrath zu erhalten. Ist bei Ihnen etwas aus u M. orbicularis geworden? Auf Kalkland namentlich sollten solche dort gut gedeihen. Von manchen der Acacien Nord-West Australiens fehlen noch Frucht-Exemplare als Material für die Vollendung meines Werkes[.]

Wenn Sie etwas mehr zu Ruhe gekommen sind, könnten Sie mir wohl einige Notizen über Ihren neuen Garten für ein deutsches Fachblatt senden.

Etwas angetrockneter Saft von wäre für die Weltausstellung sehr erwünscht.

Nach der Eröffnung der Weltausstellung werden die Arbeiten an austr. Pfl. aufs Neue vorgenommen oder fortgesetzt werden.

Beeren von getrocknet würden keimfähige Samen mir zum Vertheilen geben.

In accordance with your wishes I have immediately written in your interest to my university friend Krichauff,

and have asked him to apply himself also to Mr Basedow and Mr Homburg in favour of the Minister's intention to make £800 annually available to you for wages. The latter visited me here recently, and I used the opportunity to praise your excellent management of the Gardens there.

Following your note, I will now add this species to the new enlarged edition of the 'Select plants'.

In B88.13.02 M recorded under : 'Attains a height of 80 feet. Likes ferruginous soil (M. Holtze)'.

Does it also produce kino? I expect the growth is slow? probably does not occur so far west. The colour of its flowers is the same as with E. miniata.

M lists this species, under , in his editions of Select Plants from B83.13.06; cultivation by Holtze at Port Darwin is first mentioned in B85.12.03; the usual spelling is Manihot glaziovii, the name given in the description in Martius (1840-1906), vol. 11, part 2, p. 446.

to the Governor of Fiji, Sir John Thurston, because His Excellency has a practical interest in the culture of useful tropical plants, and has only recently advised me here on such, and has received from me many rare things over the course of the years,

Numerous letters from Thurston dating from February 1879 to April 1886 are transcribed in this edition; no letters from M to Thurston have been found.

so that he could send you quite a lot, and much that is useful at that.

for distribution to correspondents far away in the interior. As does not ripen its seed here in the south, I have to rely on you also to obtain fresh stock. Did and M. orbicularis do any good with you? It should do well there, particularly on calcareous ground. Of several of the Acacias of North-West Australia material of fruiting specimens is still lacking to complete my work

After the opening of the International Exhibition I will once more resume or continue work on Australian plants.
