Nehmen Sie meinen besten Dank hin, hochgeehrter Herr Stephani, für die Benennung der austral. Jungermanniaceae. Sie werden inzwischen einige andere erhalten haben; auch werde ich mich freuen, Ihnen künftig Anderes aus derselben Pflanzen Ordnung senden zu können.
Würden Sie mir die Güte erweisen, bei unserem Freunde Herrn Professor Lüerssen

vorzusprechen, um sich zu erkundigen, ob die von mir gesandten Farnstämme (mehreren Arten) in tauglichen Zustande und frei bei ihm ankamen; auch möchte ich gern wissen, ob ihn einige Filices in getrockneten Exemplaren erreichten. Fast fürchte ich, dass dieser rastlose Gelehrte sich überarbeitete u. krank wurde; denn seit langer Zeit hat er gar nicht mehr geschrieben. Vielleicht ist er auch missvergnügt, dass ich die Benennung der Pflanzen der Frau Dietrich noch nicht vollendete. Mein wiederholtes Kränkeln, unvorhergesehene neue Amtsarbeiten, die fast alljährigen Extra-Arbeiten für Weltausstellungen, haben mir nicht Musse gelassen, die Bearbeitung oberwähnter Pflanzen bisher ganz durchzuführen; dazu ist die Sache eine unerquickliche, denn oft fehlen die Früchte der Arten, u. Gartenpflanzen fremder Länder sind indiscriminirt den einheimischen zugemischt.
Heute sende ich ein nettes Paket jüngst angekommener Papuanischer Farne durch die Post an Hr Prof Lüerssen ab, hoffend dass solche ihm nützen werden u er selbige bald bearbeiten werde.

also I will be pleased to be able to send you others from the same Order of plants in the future.
Would you render me the kindness of calling on our friend Professor Luerssen to ask whether the tree ferns (several species) sent by me reached him in good condition and free of cost ; also I would like to know whether some ferns in dried specimens reached him. I almost fear that this indefatigable savant has overworked himself and become ill, as he has not written to me at all for a long time. Perhaps he is also displeased that I have not yet completed the naming of the plants of Mrs Dietrich.

M described some of Dietrich's specimens including, for example, Acacia dietrichiana that he named in her honour. However, despite his promise to Luerssen, through whom he had acquired a large collection of Dietrich's material, he never published a systematic account of her collections. See also M to R. My repeated indifferent health, unexpected new official work, the almost yearly extra work for international exhibitions have not left me leisure to quite carry out the working up of the above-mentioned plants till now; in addition the matter is an unproductive one, since the fruits of the species are often lacking and garden plants of foreign countries are indiscriminately mixed in with the indigenous.
Today I will send a nice packet of recently arrived Papuan ferns to Professor Luerssen by post, hoping that they will be of use to him and he will soon work them up.

Letter not found. There is a presentation copy of vol. 2 of Luerssen (1879-82), in the library at MEL. However Luerssen's inscription is not dated. MEL also has an offprint of Luerssen (1883), but this was sent to M by Adolf Engler by whom, as the general editor of a series of publications on the flora of southern Japan and the Liu-Kiu Islands, an introduction also appears in the pamphlet.
