I am delighted to hear, dear Mr Ramsay, of your projected visit to Europe, which to
you as a born Australian, who never crossed the Equator before, must have particular
charms, especially as you will become personally then acquainted with many of your
zoolog. Correspondents. Gladly do I enclose a note for introduction to the celebrated
and venerable Prof. Agardh.
Furthermore I send some cards, which will do service for introducing you on
any
place to men of science.

I will let the Swedish Captain here and besides also Prof Tullberg of Upsala know,
that you are bringing the Ceratodus yourself.
I envey you for all your new Papuan treasures. Goldie has still £30 from me out of
my private purse, yet for years I got
nothing
from him.

See M to E. Ramsay, 29 January 1883.
I live too far from the Bay,
to come on Board of the Steamer, to see you there with any chance of meeting you;
but as I am on most days always at my office, you would be sure, deo volente,
to find me at my poor place, after you are in our port, and I should like much to
shake hands with you before you proceed to Europe.
3
Hobson's Bay, Port Melbourne.

God willing.

Ramsay left Sydney for Naples on 2 March on Liguria which arrived in Melbourne on 4 March and 'cleared out' on 6 March 1883 (Age, 5 March 1883, p. 2; Argus, 7 March 1883, p. 4). It is not known whether M and Ramsay met in Melbourne, but
Ramsay had been given a box of water plants to take to M; see K. Bennett to M, 26
February 1883 (in this edition as 83-02-26d).
Regardfully your
Ferd. von Mueller.
