My dear Sir/
By my friend Mr Ramsay Curator of the Museum, who leaves here for Melbourne on the 3rd prox. en route for England — I send you a small box containing specimens of water plants which I obtained lately on the Lachlan River

or rather some distance from the River.

Ramsay left Sydney for Naples on 2 March on Liguria which arrived in Melbourne on 4 March and 'cleared out' on 6 March 1883 (Age, 5 March 1883, p. 2; Argus, 7 March 1883, p. 4). It is not known whether Ramsay personally delivered the box to M.
I regret that owing to the dry season the number obtainable was very limited.
During the coming winter I expect to be located for a time in the Barrier Ranges

near the South Australian boundary and whilst there I will not fail to keep an eye open for any aquatic plants
Many thanks for naming the climbing plant.
I remain my dear Sir
Yours very truly
