Ganz mit Rührung, Eminenz, wurde ich erfüllt, wie ich Ihr gütiges Schreiben an S. Gnaden den Erzbischof von Mexico las und die Antwort dieses hochstehenden Prälaten. Gewiss wird diese herablassende Güte Ihrerseits und der örtliche Einfluss des Erzbischofs uns in den Stand setzen, auch der Pflanzen-Technologie Mexico's gerecht zu werden in der wissenschaftlichen Litteratur. Mit heutiger Post sende ich die Sydney Ausgabe der "select plants" an Seine Gnaden in Mexico, wodurch der Erz-Bischof in den Stand gesetzt wird, noch genauer unsere Wünsche kennen zu lernen. Inzwischen ist die deutsche Ausgabe von Dr Goeze bei Hr Th. Fischer in Cassel erschienen, u. ich habe den Verleger beauftragt Ihnen, Eminenz, ein Exemplar zur gütigen Annahme zu senden.
Auch hier überstürzt sich Alles im Aufbau der jungen Colonien, und da die Welt-Austellung von Melbourne meine Thätigkeit als einer der Commissäre und in 3 professionellen Abteilungen (die für Chemie eingeschlossen) als Preisrichter durch mehrere Monate erheischte, ist in meinem Departement gar vieles in Rückstand gekommen, zumal da ich noch in 1882 einen geogr. u chronolog. Census der Vasculares Australiens (etwa 8000 Arten) zu beendigen habe, denen in 1883, deo volente, die 4000 Evasculares folgen sollen. Dies Werk wird eine bequeme Übersicht liefern über die Gesammt Vegetation Australiens, und ich werde die Ehre haben, Ihnen ein Exemplar für Ihre Bibliothek zu senden, auch 1 für Ihre Akademie.
Unter einigen neuen eben angelangten Pflanzen, werde ich eine Art wählen, um Ihren hohen Namen bleibend mit der Vegetation des fernen grossen Südlandes in Verbindung zu bringen. Es war längst meine Absicht, Ihnen diesen wissenschaftlichen Tribut zu liefern, aber seit langer Zeit fand sich keine entschieden neue Pflanze schön genug, um Ihnen gewürdigt zu werden.
Mit S. Gnaden dem Erzbischof Dr Goold dieser Colonie habe ich die Ehre seit 30 Jahren persönlich befreundet zu sein. Im Jahre 1853 reisten wir durch die damals ungebahnten Wildnisse von Gippsland zusammen; in einem Ritt von 6 Morgens bis 10 Abends fast ohne Unterbrechung und ohne an irgend eine Niederlassung zu kommen, gelangten wir an einen Fluss, den wir durchschreiten mussten, geschwollen von Winter Regen in tiefer Dunkelheit, um das weit jenseits gelegene nächste Haus zu erreichen. Der Erzbischof selbst musste mit grösster Lebensgefahr fast bis zu den Schultern hinauf durch das strömende Wasser gehen!
Später nahm der Dr Goold auf meinen Rath für antimalarische Zwecke eine bedeutende Menge Eucalyptus-Samen von mir nach Rom, wie das erste grosse Conseil stattfand. Mehrere Jahre nachher, zur Zeit des 2t päbstlichen Rathes zeigten die Cardinäle unserem Erzbischof die bereits heranwachsenden Eucalypten zu Tre Fontana u anderwärts bei Rome an den Fiebersümpfen; u. dies war der Ursprung der ausgedehnten Eucalypten Pflanzungen, zu welchen ich auch die antiseptischen Tannen und Föhren Californiens u Ober Indiens aber noch nicht Mexico geliefert oder vielmehr zu liefern beginne, welche einen so grossen hygienischen Einfluss dort ausüben, u wegen welcher Massregeln ich noch immer mit dem Grafen Torelli in Verbindung bin, der im Italienischen Senat diese wichtige auch anderen Erdgegenden namentlich auch Spanien u. Cuba zukommende Massregel vertritt, welche auch in Dalmatien gefördert werden könnte, wie ich vor Jahren hier dem Feldmarschal Jochmus auseinander setzte.

Bei gelegentlicher Zusammenkunft bitte ich Sie meinen ehrerbietigen Gruss den leutseligen Prinzen von Coburg-Gotha darbringen zu wollen.
Ich hielt bei der Schiller-Feier auch eine ex tempore Ansprache, unter anderem bemerkend, dass die Poesie von Schiller wie die von Homer noch nach Jahrtausende fortleben werde.
Bei der Jahresfeier des Geburtstags des Kaisers von Österreich hatte ich die Ehre zu präsidiren.

While a draft MS of this work survives in the library at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, it was never published.
This work will give a convenient overview of the whole vegetation of Australia, and I will have the honour to send you a copy for your library, as well as 1 for your Academy.
Among some new plants just arrived, I will choose a species in order to bring your distinguished name permanently into connection with the vegetation of the distant great south land. It has long been my intention to give you this scientific tribute, but for a long time I found no decidedly new plant attractive enough to be worthy of you.

In B83.03.02, M named Hibiscus Haynaldi 'in recognition of his Eminence's researches into biblic phytology and of his strenuous endeavors to advance vegetable technology'.
For 30 years I have had the honour to be a personal friend of His Grace Archbishop Goold of this Colony. In the year 1853, we travelled together through the then untrod wilderness of Gippsland; in a ride from 6 in the morning to 10 at night almost without break and without coming to any settlement, we arrived at a river which we had to walk through, swollen with winter rain in deep darkness to reach the next house situated far on the other side. The Archbishop himself with the greatest danger to life had to go through the flowing water almost up to the shoulders!

There are no private letters in the Goold correspondence held at the Melbourne Diocesan Archives. Goold noted in his diary, 21 April 1853, that at an overnight stop on a trip to Gippsland, he met M, 'a German Doctor who introduced himself as Colonial Botanist'. The locality was somewhere south-east of Dandenong on the road to Western Port, probably the La Trobe Inn, Pakenham, Vic. See Darragh (2003).
Later, on my advice, Dr Goold took a considerable number of Eucalyptus seeds from me to Rome for antimalarial purposes, when the first great Council took place.

Several years later at the time of a 2nd pontifical council the Cardinals showed our Archbishop the already tall-growing eucalypts at Tre Fontana and elsewhere near Rome on the fever swamps; and this was the origin of the extensive plantings of eucalypts, to which I also supplied the antiseptic firs and pines of California and upper India, but not yet Mexico or rather am beginning to supply, which exert such a great hygenic influence there, and on account of which measures I am still in contact with Count Torelli,

who in the Italian Senate looks after these important measures, also reaching other regions of the earth especially also Spain and Cuba, which also could be promoted in Dalmatia, as I pointed out to Field marshal Jochmus here some years ago.

At the Schiller celebration I also delivered an ex tempore address remarking amongst other things that the poetry of Schiller, as that of Homer, will still survive after thousands of years.

Attached to the letter is a clipping from the Argus, 11 November 1882, p. 9, reporting the Schiller comemoration at the Turn Verein in La Trobe Street, Melbourne. On this occasion M read Schiller's 'Rudolph von Habsburg'.
I had the honour to preside at the celebration of the birthday of the Emperor of Austria.

The birthday of Emperor Franz Joseph I (reigned 1848-1916) was on 18 August and a report of the celebratory dinner over which M presided appeared in the Argus, 19 August 1882, p. 11.
