Monsieur LE COMTE,

Votre communication m'honore beaucoup, ainsi que la confiance, que vous me montrez en me consultant touchant les plantations d'Eucalyptus qui doivent être entreprises dans les marécages fievreux des environs de Rome, sous les auspices éclairés du gouvernement italien. Des essais ont prouvé, que l' n'est pas toujours le mieux adapté aux plantations dans les terres marécageuses; de plus cette espèce est plus sujette aux gélées, que beaucoup d'autres. J'ai en conséquence conseillé dans plusieurs cas, que l' fût choisi pour les régions marécageuses, pour lesquelles il est le plus propre.

Pour l'Italie centrale il serait aussi préférable, comme il supporte un plus grand degré de froid, que l' . Le bois est aussi d'une valeur beaucoup plus considérable pour l'ebénisterie, pour les traverses de chemin de fer, ainsi que pour les constructions souterraines.

Pour ces usages seuls l' devrait être cultivé en Italie comme un des bois de construction les plus durables de tout le globe!

Par l'obligeance du chevalier Marinucci, le digne représentant de l'Italie dans notre colonie, j'ai l'honneur de vous faire parvenir une quantité de graines fraîches suffisante pour faire venir des milliers d'arbres; et après avoir consulté le chevalier, j'y ai ajouté les graines de plusieurs autres Eucalyptus, afin que l'on pût établir à Rome une déduction concernant la vigueur des autres sortes d'Eucalyptus dans cet endroit.

Si l' , comme je l'espère, supporte le climat de l'Italie, vous obtenez alors une espèce plus puissante, que n'est l' , parceque celui-là contient quatre fois autant d'huile volatile (Eucalyptöl).

Je prendrai toujours le plus vif intérêt aux progrès de la culture de l'Eucalyptus dans votre pays, et serai heureux d'y aider; ainsi donc, cher Monsieur, veuillez mettre mes services à votre disposition en tout temps sans la moindre hésitation.

greatly honours me, and likewise the confidence you show in me by consulting me regarding the plantings of Eucalyptus that ought to be undertaken in the fever-ridden marshes near Rome, under the enlightened auspices of the Italian government.

For further details of M's part in introducing Eucalyptus to the marshes near Rome, see Barclay-Lloyd (1994). See also M to L. Haynald, 22 November 1882.

Trials have proved that is not always the most suitable for planting in marshy ground; moreover, this species is more liable to frosts than many others. I have as a result advised in several cases that be chosen for marshy regions, for which it is the most appropriate.

For central Italy, too, it would be preferable since it withstands a greater degree of cold than . The wood is also much more valuable for cabinet work, for railway sleepers, and for underground constructions.

For these reasons alone, ought to be cultivated in Italy as one of the most durable construction timbers in all the world!

Through the obligingness of the chevalier Marinucci, Italy's worthy representative in our colony, I have the honor of sending you a quantity of fresh seeds sufficient to give rise to thousands of trees; and after consulting the chevalier, I have added seeds of several other Eucalyptus, so that you can reach some conclusion in Rome about the vigour of other kinds of Eucalyptus there.

If tolerates the Italian climate as I hope, you will have a more potent species than , because it contains four times as much volatile oil (Eucalyptol).

I shall always take the liveliest interest in the progress of Eucalyptus culture in your country, and shall be happy to help in that regard; therefore, dear Sir, take advantage of my services at any time without the least hesitation.
