The letter is undated; a note on the file cover provides the basis for dating it to 29 July.
29 July 1881
Many months ago, dear Mr Wilson, a set of my works (elegantly bound) was forwarded to the Agent General for the Imperial Library of Vienne in exchange for a superb large illustrated volume of Brazilian plants, obtained by the Emperor Maximilian of Mexico, which copy went to me and in the public Library of Melbourne.

See M to W. Odgers, 17 April 1880.
I would just merely ask, whether any letter of acknowledgement of this return-gift was received from the Austrian Government.
3
See T. Wilson to M, 3 August 1881 (in this edition as 81-08-03a), and M to T. Wilson, 4 August 1881 (in this edition as 81-08-04a).
Regardfully your
Ferd. von Mueller
