South-Yarra,

Melbourne.
17 Apr. 1880.
To W. H. Odgers Esqr
Undersecretary
Sir.
I have the honor to solicit, that the honorable the Chief Secretary will be pleased to convey through the Agent General to the Right honorable the Secretary of State for the Colonies my best expression of appreciation of the honor, shown me by his Majesty the Emperor of the Austrian and Hungarian Empire,
2
Franz Joseph I.
in presenting to me the magnificent volume on the of Brazil gathered by the late Emperor Maximilian of Mexico.

Peyritsch (1879). The copy in the State Library of Victoria is inscribed on the title page ‘Presented by Baron Ferd, von Mueller April 19th 1880’.
This volume must be valued most highly, as to this princely gift attaches a particularly deep and sad interest, as it is one of the bequests of a Sovereign, distinguished by his patronage and cultivation of science.
May I further suggest, that in return for this splendid volume, which I intend to place in the public library of Melbourne, an elegantly bound copy of the series of my works, may be presented to the Imperial Library of Vienne.

M's suggestion was approved on 30 April 1880 and Odgers asked J. Ferres, the Government Printer, to forward the books to 'this office'. Ferres responded, on 22 September 1880: 'These works bound as requested were supplied to the Baron's assistant yesterday to deliver at the Chief Secretary's Office accordingly'. A letter was sent to the Agent General in London on 2 October 1880. The 23 volumes sent are listed on a memorandum as follows from the Agent General's office to the Colonial Office, a copy of which is included in the file together with copies of related correspondence between the Colonial Office and the office of the Agent General. The works sent were evidently not all rebound in a uniform style. They are listed here with the titles given in the list, although some vary from the actual title as published. The number from M's publication list has been added.
