I understand, dear Mr Odgers, that the books, intended for Vienne as a return gift
are at your Office. As an opportunity just occurs, to forward them by the Austrian
Ship, I beg to send my Assistant for them, if you approved of the binding. The Ship
leaves on Tuesday next.

The Austro-Hungarian Lloyd Company's steamship Polluce cleared out from Melbourne on 6 October. The books were sent instead through official
channels. George Lane, Secretary, Tender Board, wrote to the Chief Secretary, R. Ramsay,
on 30 September 1880: 'I beg to notify that have this day shipped per P&O Company's
R.M.S. Assam 1 case, containing Books received from your office to His Majesty The
Emperor of Austria c/o [care of] The Secy State London The B/L [bill of lading] has
been forwarded to the Agent General.' M was then informed of this.
The file includes copies of correspondence between the Victorian Agent-General's office
and the Colonial Office in London relating to the presentation.

Regardfully your
Ferd. von Mueller.
