With the steamship " Northumberland " a large case with Monocotyledoneae is at last despatched to you last week, dear Mr Bentham, as usual under Dr Hooker's care. The contents are:

Besides 8 parcels of Xanthorrhoeae, & 1 of Dasypogon.
I added also a Parcel of plants from Lord Howe's Island, (2 sets) from Fullagars Expedition; please ask Dr Hooker, if he could afford to purchase them for any price he thinks fit, as the collector is in very poor circumstances.

work must be reduced ⅔ or ¾
Altho there are many additions to R Browns in my collections, still after due reduction I shall not likely be able to bring the whole up to the original number of R Brown's

but it was impossible under existing circumstances to leave here. Helpless as I am even in manual work to a large extent, I cannot send any of my new plants now to Kew;

the selecting would involve many weeks work, but as I intend to issue a supplemental volume I will then successively put up also specimens of all new plants for Kew next year.
