Mit dem Schiffe Kent, das in dieser Woche absegeln wird, gedenke ich über London eine Kiste an Sie zu befördern. Diese wird eine Menge an der Luft getrocknete unpräparirte Algen enthalten u eine Anzahl Vogelbälge enthalten. Ich überlasse Ihnen es, wohin Sie die Vogelbälge senden wollen, vielleicht an eins der öffentlichen Museen. Unter den Algen, die sämtlich von der Port Phillip Bay sind, wird sich schwerlich etwas Neues finden, vielleicht hängen aber ein paar neue Polyzoa daran. Es ist wird mir aber wohl möglich sein aus andern Gegenden Australiens Ihnen demnächst etwas Neues zu liefern. Mir sind Sammlungen von verschiedenen Theilen der Küste versprochen, sogar von Nord-Ost Australien. Meine Agenten in London, Betham & Blackitt, Cox's Quay, Lower Thames Street, werden die Kiste weiter befördern, u ich werde die Fracht bis London bezahlen. Im vorigen Jahr sandte ich eine werthvolle zoologische Sammlung nach Stockholm für das königl. Museum. Bisher weiss ich aber nicht einmal ob solche angekommen .
Ich hoffte Ihnen den 5. Band der Fragmenta zu senden; allein der Binder hat seine Arbeit nicht vollendet. Indessen da bald mehr Algen zu senden sein werden, kann das Buch dann mitkommen.
Würden sie Änderungen an Harveys Bearbeitung der Algen Australiens anrathen? Wir haben selbige für die Flora Austral. wieder zu bearbeiten. Vielleicht können Sie uns gütig Supplemente u Berichtigungen liefern.

Ist der Baron Cederström jetzt wieder in seiner scandinavischen Heimath? O, bitte, grüssen Sie diesen prächtigen Mann.
Unter den Algen finden Sie ein kleines Packet von den Chatham Inseln von Travers gesammelt. Diese bitte ich Sie zu vorderst zu bearbeiten, da man von dort gar keine Algen kennt. Die Arten scheinen mir mit denen von Neuseeland identisch. Es wäre gut mir eine vollständige bearbeitete Series der Chatham Algen für mein Staatsherbarium zurückzusenden.
Möchten Sie nicht dem Professor Suringar in Holland eine Alge widmen als Anerkennung für seine Untersuchung der

Noble Sir,
I intend to dispatch a case to you via London with the ship Kent, which will sail during this week. This will contain a large amount of air-dried, unprepared algae and a number of bird skins. I leave it to you, where you want to send the bird skins, perhaps to one of the public museums.

Among the algae, which are all from Port Phillip Bay, will hardly be anything new, but perhaps a few new polyzoa may be attached to them. But it may be possible for me to send something from other parts of Australia before long. I have been promised collections from different parts of the coast, even from North-East Australia. My agents in London, Betham & Blackitt,

Cox's Quay, Lower Thames Street, will forward the case on, and I shall pay the freight as far as London. Last year I sent a valuable zoological collection to Stockholm for the Royal Museum.

So far I do not even know, if it has arrived .
I had hoped to send you the 5th volume of the Fragmenta, but the bookbinder has not yet completed his work. However, as more algae are to follow soon, the book can be enclosed with them.
Would you advise any changes to Harvey's work on Australian algae?

Harvey’s major work was Harvey (1858-1863).
We have to prepare these for the Flora australiensis.

Despite M's urging and suggesting specialists who might assist (e.g. M to G. Bentham, 23 July 1863, and M to G. Bentham, 27 February 1869), Bentham declined to include algae or other cryptogamic plants except ferns in Flora australiensis, as he did not have the expertise to deal with these groups (G. Bentham to M, 13 May 1869) and he was averse to co-authorship of taxonomic works (see Bentham (1884)).

Among the algae you will find a small packet from the Chatham Islands, collected by Travers.

J. Agardh (1871) is a brief list of species collected from the Chatham Islands by Henry Travers in 1863-4, submitted and prefaced by M (B71.05.03).
I ask that you would work on these first, as no algae are known from there. The species seem to me to be identical with those from New Zealand. It would be good to return to me a complete worked up set of the Chatham algae for my State Herbarium.
Could you not dedicate an alga to Professor Suringar in Holland in recognition of his research of
