Edler Herr.
Ferd. Mueller.

Noble Sir,
I have the honour herewith to hand over the third copy of my first bill of exchange for the Heuglin-Fund,

The fund established by Petermann for the expedition under Theodor Heuglin in search of the explorer Eduard Vogel, lost in central Africa.
also the first of a second bill of exchange, which constitutes the remittance from me of the cash donations that have come in so far for your admirable enterprise. The cash for the amount subscribed by Father Dr Backhaus as well as about £10 collected elsewhere in Sandhurst

has not yet been sent in. Dr Bayer in Adelaide is so kind as to try—and, it seems, with success —to obtain subscriptions there,
4
See 'Dr. Vogel's African Expedition', South Australian register, 6 July 1861, p. 3S: 'the German Committee wrote to Dr. F. Mueller, in Melbourne, to solicit through him assistance from their countrymen in Australia. Dr. Mueller is now in communication on the subject with Dr. Bayer, from whom our information has been derived.’
a kindness for which we cannot give this gentleman enough credit as he is one of the foremost doctors in Australia, who is left with little spare time with his large practice.
We have been less fortunate, however, in Sydney, as you can see from the enclosed letter.
