Adolph Solmitz of Solmitz & Co, merchants in Sydney, was Consul for Lübeck. M sent Solmitz's letter to August Petermann as an enclosure with his own letter of 24 August 1861( in this edition as 61-08-24b).

Ich bin im Besitz Ihrer Zuschrift so wie des Packets der Circulare für die v. Heuglins Expedition zur Nachforschung des unglücklichen Dr Vogel etc. u. thut es mir recht sehr leid, dass ich Ihnen kein besseres Resultat der Theilnahme welches ein solches Unternehmen hier finden sollte mittheilen kann. Ich habe mit mehreren der hiesigen deutschen Herren gesprochen habe ebenfalls Ihre Circulare nach Brisbane Rockhampton etc gesandt, von den letztgenannten Plätzen habe nun zwar noch keine Antworten erhalten, hier am Platz habe aber stets zur Antwort erhalten, dass der Todt Dr Vogels jetzt als ganz bestimmt anzunehmen sei, u. dass die Expedition ins innere von Africa für viel grösseres Interesse für England als für Deutschland sei; dass in Deutschland selbst sehr wenig für diese Sache gethan werden konnte, u. dass es für uns hier fast durchaus ganz ohne Interesse ist, dass dagegen das Innere Australiens zu erforschen für uns viel wichtiger sei u. man daher nichts thun wolle. Wenn ich mit oben gesagtem auch nun selbst zum grossen Theil übereinstimme, so achte ich doch Ihre eigenen Bemühungen so sehr, dass ich mit Vergnügen meinen Freund Katzenstein beauftragen werde, für meine eigene Person nach Verhältnissen dazu beizutragen; auch werde ich nicht verfehlen falls ich hier oder da durch hier etwas für ihren Zweck erhalten sollte, Ihnen solches zuzusenden. — Wir sind seit einiger Zeit hier bemüht, etwas für den Deutschen National-Verein zusammen zu bringen, stossen aber ebenfalls durch die Deutschen Uneinigkeiten auf die grössten Schwierigkeiten.

I have received your letter as well as the packet with the circulars for the Heuglin Expedition in search of the unfortunate Dr Vogel etc.,

Letter not found. M had sent circulars appealing for subscriptions to the 'Heuglin Fund' to the Australian German community; see M to A. Petermann, 25 June 1861 (in this edition as 61-06-25a).

and I am really very sorry, that I cannot report to you a better result of the interest that such an enterprise ought to find here. I have spoken to several of the German gentlemen here and have also sent your circulars to Brisbane, Rockhampton etc., though I have not yet received a reply from these latter places; but here locally I have always been given the answer, that the death of Dr Vogel could now be considered certain and that the expedition into the interior of Africa was of far greater interest to Britain than to Germany, and that in Germany itself very little had been achieved in this cause,

Petermann instituted the fund in about July 1860; by the end of 1861, 10,000 Taler had been collected.

while for us here it was completely without any interest, while on the other hand it was far more important for us to explore the interior of Australia, and that therefore they did not want to do anything. Although I largely agree with the above, I nonetheless respect your own efforts so much, that it will be my pleasure to instruct my friend Mr Katzenstein

Which of the Katzenstein merchants in Melbourne Solmitz meant is not clear. At this time Joseph H. Katzenstein was trading in Melbourne in a partnership with William Neustetel; the partnership evidently also involved Joseph Katzenstein Jr, who must have been the person mentioned in M to J. Haast, 24 December 1861 (in this edition as 61-12-24a). Isaac Katzenstein, who was later in partnership with Joseph H., was also in Melbourne; see M to R. Heales, 10 January 1861.
