2
In an earlier letter to the Chief Commissioner of Police, Frederick Standish (M to F. Standish, 7 December 1860), M had discussed the possibility of borrowing five horses.
The registry book (VPRS 1168) records that M's letter was referred to Standish on 12 December 1860 annotated: 'can he lend the horses'. The letter was returned to the Chief Secretary and then forwarded to M on 15 December annotated 'for his information', without indicating how Standish had responded. In his report on his journey (M to R. Heales, 10 January 1861), M states that shortly after setting out for Mt Baw Baw, he and his companions were led by the nature of the country to leave their horses and proceed on foot; he does not mention having the use of police horses.
