Im Anschluss gebe ich den Brief von Herrn Dr Sonder mit verbindlichstem Dank zurück.
Betreffend den darin ausgedrückten Wunsch wegen der Motivirung der fraglichen Auszeichnung,
so wird sich hiewegen wohl nichts mehr machen lassen, nachdem dem Herrn v Müller sowohl
vom Minist. d. Ausw., als von hier aus das entsprechende Dokument zugefertigt worden
ist.
In der That sind es aber
für uns
doch nur die beträchtl.
Schenkungen
, welche zu der fragl Auszeichnung veranlasst haben, nicht die sonstigen Verdienste
v Müllers.
Nach meiner Ansicht könnten letztere höchstens noch in einem
öffentl Artikel
neben den Schenkungen erwähnt werden

See W. Sonder to F. von Krauss, 17 August 1871 (in this edition as M71-08-17), in
which he passed on M's wishes to have his various scientific merits recognised in
the certificate of his elevation to the rank of hereditary Baron ['Freiherr']; cf.
also M to F. von Krauss, 8 October 1871, in which he expressed the same wish.
Regarding the wish expressed in it concerning the motivation for the said distinction,
it is unlikely that anything can be done about this any more, as the relevant document
has been forwarded by the Foreign Minister as well as from here to Mr von Mueller.
But indeed
for us
it is only the considerable
donations
that motivated the said distinction, not von Mueller's other merits.
In my view the latter could at best only be mentioned in a published notice together
with the donations.
