MS annotated by Schmidlin for Golther: 'K. Cult Ministerium | auf den hohen Erlass vom 3. v. M. The letter appears to be a reply to a letter from Golther to Schmidlin of 3 March 1869. A draft copy is also on file. A draft copy of a further letter from Krauss to Schmidlin dated 7 May 1869 follows the above letter. An undated note regarding the statutes of the Mueller Foundation, a partial draft with some slightly different wording of the note with this letter, is attached at the end of the draft letters.

erlaube ich mir als Termin der jährlichen Aufforderung zur Bewerbung der Studirenden um das v. Müller'sche Reisestipendium den Anfang des Winter-Semesters in Vorschlag zu bringen.
Wenn die akademische Behörde in Tübingen diesen Zeitpunkt jedes Jahr zur Kenntnis der Studirenden bringt, so hätte der Bewerber noch Zeit, während des Winters die nöthigen Vorstudien und Vorbereitungen zu seiner aussereuropäischen Reise zu machen und könnte etwa im Frühjahr in den Genuss des vorhandenen Ertrags des Stiftungskapitals treten.

The following note by Krauss concerning the Statutes of the Mueller Foundation (not in the copper plate writing of the above letter) is attached to the letter.
Ueber die Verwendung der Zinse des von Dr. Ferd. v. Müller in Melbourne ausgesetzten Stipendiums vermag ich nichts weiter anzugeben, als was mir v. Müller in seinem Brief vom 3. März 1868, den ich in meinem Bericht vom 25 June wörtlich abgeschriebn habe, mitgetheilt hat.
Nach diesem dürften die Hauptpunkte seyn

der sich gleichzeitig für naturwissenschaftliche Reisen ausserhalb Europa vorbereitet hat.
2) Die Wahl unter den Bewerbern steht nur dem zoologischen Conservator des K. Naturalien Kabinets in Stuttgart zu.
3) Der Erwählte hat sich vor seiner Abreise mit den Conservatoren der genannten Anstalt über die Naturalien, die für die Anstalt zu sammeln wünschenswerth sind, zu verständigen.
4) Der Nutzniesser des Stipendiums ist verpflichtet, dem K. Naturalien Kabinet in Stuttgart die erste Auswahl unter den von seiner Reise mitgebrachten Naturalien nach annehmbaren Preisen zu gewähren.
5) Sollte ein Bewerber in einem Stipendienjahr nicht auftreten oder für würdig gehalten werden, so könnte der dadurch erhöhte Ertrag des Stipendiums späteren Aspiranten zu Nutze kommen.
Royal Administration
I take the liberty of proposing the beginning of the Winter Semester as the deadline for the annual invitation for applications by students for the von Mueller travel grant.
If the academic officials in Tübingen bring this date to the knowledge of the students each year, the applicant would still have time during the winter to make the necessary preliminary studies and preparations for his travel outside Europe and in about spring could enter into the benefit of the available proceeds of the foundation capital.

On the use of the interest of the grant set out by Dr Ferd. von Mueller in Melbourne, I am not able to state anything more than what von Mueller told me in his letter of 3 March 1868,

According to this the main points are
The applicant must be a student of medicine in Tübingen, who at the same time has prepared himself for natural history travels outside Europe.
The selection among the applicants appertains only to the zoological Curator of the Royal Natural History Cabinet in Stuttgart.
Before his departure the person chosen has to come to an agreement with the Curators of the said institution about the natural history items that are desirable to collect for the institution.
The beneficiary of the grant is obliged give the Royal Natural History Cabinet in Stuttgart the first choice of the natural history items brought back from his journey at fair prices.
Should an applicant not proceed in a grant year or be deemed worthy, the increased amount of the grant as a result can benefit later aspirants.
