Es war mir sehr erfreulich, hochgeehrter Herr Professor, die prächtigen Karten zu erhalten, welche der Herr Hofrath so liberal mir schenkt. Ich bitte Sie, dem ausgezeichneten Herrn meinen besten Dank auszusprechen.

Sehr bald werde ich etwas als Gegengabe zu bieten haben, nämlich Capt. Kristensen's Karte über seine Fahrt nach Victoria Land während des letzten südlichen Sommers, und die 9te der Ausgaben in der engl Sprache von den "Select Plants", wieder erweitert. Das Werk sollte Ihre Anstalt interessiren besonders deshalb, weil bei jeder Art die natürliche Verbreitung angegeben ist, soweit wir solche kennen bis zur Neuzeit; dann aber auch, weil in diesem Buche zum ersten mal die hervorragendsten Nutzpflanzen der Erde (mit Ausschluß derjenigen des Unterlandes in der Äquatorial Zone geographisch zusammengestellt sind. Es ist in diesem Werke dies überhaupt zum ersten mal geschehen, so dass die öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit darauf gelenkt werden möchte durch Ihre schönen "Mittheilungen".

Ich höre manchmal sehr herablassend durch Herrn General Westmueller vom Darmstadt Hofe.

The work should be particularly interesting to your institution, because with each species the natural distribution is cited as far as we know it to the present; but in addition, because in this book for the first time the most prominent useful plants of the earth (with exception of those of the lowlands in the equatorial zone) are geographically arranged. This has been done absolutely for the first time in this work, so that the public attention might be directed to it by your fine Mittheilungen.
