Es ist mir ausserordentlich erfreulich, hochgeehrter Herr Professor, dass Sie eine Ausarbeitung in toto australischer Lichenen in Aussicht stellen können. Keiner von uns findet, dass er Alles vollenden konnte, was beabsichtigt war. "Der Mensch denkt, — u. Gott lenkt". Mögen Sie aber doch mit Ihrer kräftigen Constitution die geistige Kraft u. namentlich auch das Sehvermögen J. Agardhs auch für Ihre Zukunft haben. Was Sie veröffentlichen wird auch gewiss das Jahre der ersten Publication jeder Flechte im richtigen Genus bringen mit dem Autor der für die richtige generische Position der Art sorgte u. die Verbreitung über die Erde, wenn auch nur mit Anfangs Buchstaben der Erdtheile wie in meinem Census der Vasculares Australiens, der freilich in der 3ten Ausgabe auch in dieser Hinsicht erweitert sein wird.

Ich wusste nicht, dass Rev. Mr. Wilson augenleidend sei, noch dass er eine Series seiner so zahlreichen Lichenen meiner Anstalt nach Ihrer Bearbeitung zuwenden wolle! Ich werde demnächst zu seinem Gottesdienst gehen, aber er wohnt entfernt von mir u. ist auf Reisen auch oft abwesend gewesen.

Sind Sie Director des bot. Gartens? Ich frage, weil ich Ihnen dann u. wann Sämereien australischer Gewächse zuwenden könnte.

M to J. Müller, 4 March 1895, included a request that Müller undertake this task.

None of us finds that he could complete everything that was intended. "Man proposes, — God disposes". However, may you have the intellectual strength with your robust constitution and especially also the vision of Agardh for your future too. What you publish will also undoubtedly bring the year of the first publication of each lichen in the correct genus with that author who provided for the correct generic position of the species, and the distribution over the earth, even if only with initial letters of the continents as in my census of the vasculares of Australia, which admittedly will be enlarged in the third edition also in this respect.

B89.12.03 was the second and last edition of M's Systematic census. M may have been referring to a proposed 'Conspectus', mentioned in Müller's annotation to M to J. Müller, 4 March 1895. Müller's reply letter not found.

I did not know that Rev. Mr Wilson is suffering from eye disease, nor that he is intending to give a series of his so numerous lichens to my institution after your working up. I will soon go to his divine service, but he lives a distance from me and also has often been absent on journeys.
