Diese Wochenpost, venerabler Freund, brachte mir eben Ihre erste Analecta für 1894. Es ist ein wunderbares Werk eines Octogenars! und beweist die frische Lebendigkeit Ihrer Arbeiskraft! Möge solche noch recht lange zum Heil der Algenkunde ausdauern und zur Freude Ihrer vielen Verehrer.

Correspondence ist jetzt jährlich 5000-6000 Briefe! Das ist aber nur ein kleiner Theil der Arbeiten. Das vielseitige nothwendige Lesen für Zwecke meines Departments von neuesten Schriften und Büchern in der ganzen Pflanzen-Kunde, der Medicin, Chemie, Technology, Agricultur in später Nacht bringt die täglichen Arbeitsstunden auf 16, Sonntags 12 um des Abend-Gottesdienstes wegen. — Der Supplement-Band für die Fl. Australiensis ist in Druck; eine neue wieder erweiterte Ausgabe der Select plants ist nöthig, da durch Verkauf nach und nach in der Regierungs Druckerei der Vorrath fast erschöpft ist. Cas. D.C. drängt auf die Lieferung der längst versprochenen Myoporinen, freilich nur 80 Arten aber in langen Formenreihen und geographischen Nachweisen Der neue Census muss überstehen bis 1896, wenn mir die göttliche Vorsehung gnädig so lange noch Kraft erhält.

Das Benennen der Vascularen für viele Amateur Sammler über fast ganz Australien bricht auch sehr in die Zeit. Das Herbarium in toto seit 1840 umfasst etwa 1 million Bögen und muss in Ordnung gehalten werden. Wäre das doch im Ganzen leicht gegen Insecten Schaden als Algen.

It is a wonderful work of an octogenarian! and proves the fresh liveliness of your capacity for work! May it last yet for a very long time for the benefit of the study of algae and to the pleasure of your many admirers.

I was particularly pleased to see from your new beautiful work that you have already published the new genus

Agardh (1894-1903), Continuatio 1, p.103, pl. 2, figs 1-3.

and I congratulated the splendid J. B. Wilson this morning.

It is also very encouraging for my amateur collectors, and for me, that you thought of us as the donors of the specimens in the new "memoir". I also still urge the contributors by sending valuable seeds and other presents. Thus I suppose 1894 will also become a good year of algae for us all.

If I do not write each time after the receipt of letters or consignments, you will certainly excuse it. My correspondence written in my own hand is now 5000-6000 letters annually! However, that is only a small part of the work. The extensive necessary reading of the latest journals and books in the whole discipline of plants, medicine, chemistry, technology, agriculture in the late night for the objects of my department brings the daily work hours to 16, Sundays 12 on account of the evening church service. — The supplement volume for the Flora Australiensis is in press,

since by sales now and then in the Government Printery the stock is almost exhausted. Casimir De Candolle is pressing on the part of the long promised , admittedly only 80 species, but in long series of forms and geographical information.

M had undertaken, long before, to contribute an account of the for the series that Casimir de Candolle had taken over from his father Alphonse de Candolle, Monographiæ phanerogamarum: Prodromi nunc continuatio, nunc revisio, and he continued to commit himself to doing this (see M to A. de Candolle, 12 August 1881; M to A. de Candolle, 4 March 1884 (in this edition as 84-03-04a); 26 January 1886; M to C. de Candolle, 12 March 1894 (in this edition as 94-03-12a); and M to C. de Candolle, 21 January 1895 (in this edition as 95-01-21a). However, he never did so, and neither did a monograph on the family by any other author appear in the series.

The new census must stand over until 1896, if Divine Providence graciously keeps my strength so long.

No new edition of M's census of Australian plants was published; the final edition was B89.12.03.

The naming of the vasculars for many amateur collectors over almost the whole of Australia also breaks into the time very much. The herbarium in toto since 1840 comprises about 1 million sheets and must be kept in order. Were that in general easy [to protect] against insect damage, like algae!

Daily I must give oral information to rural people. Then Papuan and other novelties are to be published. I am just about finished with the 700 vasculares of the Elder Expedition

Elder Scientific Exploring Expedition, 1891-2. M and Ralph Tate published B96.14.02, a delayed account of the botanical results of the expedition, but in the meantime some new species from its collections were described in B93.02.03 and B93.14.07. See Lucas (2018), p. 816 for the publication history of the botany of the Elder expedition.

(admittedly only about 20 new species and no new genera but several critical forms and much new geographical information.
