Verpflichtet bin ich Ihnen für Ihre Freundlichkeit, geehrter Herr Doctor, meinen Vorschlag für eine illustrirte Monographie der Characeen in so schnelle Berathung gezogen zu haben. Die Sache eilt ja nicht; aber es wäre gut, wenn ein vorläufiger Plan entworfen werden könnte, damit darnach die Kosten-Anschläge den Förderern des Unternehmens vorgelegt werden könnten. Mir scheint, das Werk könnte am Besten in ungezwungenen Decaden erscheinen, etwa wie meine Eucalypten, Acacien, Salsolaceen, Myoporinen und Candolleaceen. Wenn immer dann 10 Platten und Beschreibungen fertig sind, könnte ja ein Fascicle erscheinen. Die Platten sollten un numerirt sein, u. so jede auch ein Blatt ohne Pagina-Nummer haben, damit nach Beendigung des Werkes, welches viele Jahre Zeit erfordern würde, das ganze systematisch geordnet werden könnte. Dieser Plan hat den Vortheil für sich, dass nur solche Arten gezeichnet zu werden brauchen, welche in vollständigen Exemplaren zur Hand sind; aber es würde wünschenswerth sein, dass in jeder Decade Arten aus mehreren Welttheilen enthalten sind, so dass auch Australien in jeder vertreten wäre.

The matter is certainly not urgent, but it would be good if a preliminary plan could be drafted, so that the cost estimates for the support of the project could be produced. It seems to me the work could best appear in casual Decades , perhaps like my Eucalypts,

Then whenever 10 plates and descriptions are ready, a fascicle could just be published. The plates should be un numbered, and so also each have a page without page number, so that after the completion of the work, which would require many years, the whole could be systematically arranged. This plan has the advantage that only such species need to be illustrated that are to hand in complete specimens; but it would be desirable that each Decade contain species from several parts of the world, so that Australia would also be represented in each.
