Eine ungewöhnliche Ursache treibt mich, edler Freund, Ihnen noch eben vor Postschluss
einige flüchtige Worte zu schreiben, denn vielleicht werden Sie in bedeutende Ausgaben
gesetzt werden, dadurch dass ich versuchsweise drei Packete trockner Pflanzen an Sie
mit der Post absandte.
Der Umstand, welcher nun besondere Erwägung verlangt, ist dieser. Unter dem bis jetzt
bestehenden Postarrangement zwischen England u den Colonien bedurfte es nur des Portos
von Brindisi bis nach irgend einen Theil des ausserenglischen Europas um meine officiellen
Briefe oder Sendungen frei zu machen. Nun
plötzlich
theilt mir das hiesige Postamt mit, dass unter dem eben in Kraft tretenden neuen
Vertrag
das volle Porto nach Deutschland
u s w. bezahlt werden muss, trotz dessen, dass ein engl. Postschiff die Briefe bis
Italien nimmt, u. alles nach England selbst ganz frei geht. Sollten Sie daher zu zahlen
haben, so ersuche ich Sie mich darüber zu unterrichten, damit ich Ihnen Ihre Auslage
zurück erstatte.
Obgleich ich wohl wenig an den "Pfl. Familien" werde helfen können, so bin ich stets
bereit, den respectiven Monographen Materialien von hier zu liefern. Einstweilen könnten
Sie ja auch für mich, bis die Weltausstellung hier vorüber ist, Epacrideen u Myoporineen
für mich reserviren.

A quite unusual motive drives me, noble friend, to write some hasty words to you just
before the close of the mail, since you will perhaps be put to significant expenditure
owing to the fact that as a trial I sent off three packets of dried plants to you
by post.
The circumstance that now requires particular consideration is this. Under the presently
existing postal arrangements between England and the Colonies, only postage from Brindisi
to any other part of Europe outside England is required to make my official letters
or consignments free. Now
suddenly
the local post office informs me
that under the new agreement just coming into force,
the full postage to Germany
and so on must be paid, notwithstanding that an English mailboat takes the letters
to Italy and everything goes quite free to England. Therefore should you have to pay,
I ask you to tell me so that I can reimburse you your outlay.
Although I probably will be able to help the Pflanzen-Familien
very little, I am always prepared to provide material from here to the respective
monographers. Meanwhile could you also reserve the
