Die Ankunft des August-Heftes Ihrer schönen Garten-Flora sowie eine der letzten Nummern der Gardeners Chronicle bringen auch mir die Nachricht von den Triumphen, welche Sie, edler Freund, an Ihrem 70sten Geburtstag feierten; u. nehmen Sie denn auch verspätet noch meine Gratulation zu diesem schönen Feste hin! Es war meine Absicht, mich thätig dabei zu betheiligen, Ihnen eine schöne Pflanze zu widmen und zu den Festgeschenken beizutragen. Wie es kam weiss ich eigentlich selbst nicht, dass ich unter dem Eindruck war, Ihr Geburtstagsfest falle in das Ende dieses Jahres, ein Irrthum, von dem ich mich nun oder kürzlich erst überzeugte.
Im ganzen Jahre ist nicht eine Pflanze in Australien entdeckt worden, die hinlänglichen gärtnerischen Werth gehabt hätte, um Ihnen gewidmet zu werden[.] So bin ich den jetzt post festum in Bezug auf Sie, was Sie aber nicht als Mangel an Verehrung deuten müssen. Wenn mir der gnädige Gotteswille noch ein Jahr Leben schenkt, soll Ihr nächster Geburtstag von mir besonders mitgefeiert werden!
Bei der grossen Entfernung kommen bei mir europäische Angelegenheiten leicht ausser Achten, was ja erklärlich ist, aber nur durch den Irrthum im Datum in Bezug auf Ihre schöne Feier entschuldigt werden kann. Das ganze Jahr ist so mit Extra-Arbeiten überladen gewesen, dass ich selten zu ruhigem Nachdenken gekommen bin.
Die engl. Colonial-Ausstellung, die Arbeiten für die neue geogr. Gesellschaft hier, deren Präsident ich in Victoria bin, die Exploration von Neu Guinea, die Herausgabe der neuen Victorian Edition of "the select plants" (enlarged), der Atlas der Myoporinen u der geforderte dichotomische "Key to the Knowledge of the Victorian Flora", gaben neben der enormen Correspondenz soviel Extra-Arbeiten, da [ich] ja auch das Museum verwalten u vergrössern muss, dass ich eigentlich geistig ganz erschöpft bin. Und nun kommt noch eine neue "Royal Commission for vegetable industries" um die ruralen Verhältnisse (entre nous) der schon durch Anleihen recht bedrückten Colonien zu haben. Ein solches Jahr Arbeit habe ich in meinem stets thätigen Leben noch nie gehabt!
Nun, mein theurer Freund, lassen Sie mich diesen Brief schliessen mit der Hoffnung, dass Ihnen die göttliche Allmacht noch durch viele Jahre inmitten Ihrer blühenden Familie es gestatte, Ihre grossen Arbeiten für die höhere Cultur und Pflanzenkunde in fester Gesundheit u in ungetrübt. Frohsinn fortzusetzen

Aus Neu Guinea wird hoffentlich bald etwas wirklich Erhabenes aus dem Pflanzenreich anlangen, das Ihren Namen zu tragen würdig wäre.

The arrival of the August issue of your beautiful Gartenflora as well as one of the last numbers of the Gardeners' Chronicle brought to me also the news of the triumphs which you, noble friend, celebrated on your 70th birthday;

please accept belatedly also my congratulations for this beautiful feast-day! I had the intention to participate actively, to dedicate to you a beautiful plant, and to contribute to the birthday gifts. I am not really sure myself how it happened, that I was under the impression, that your birthday celebration fell into the end of this year, an error, which I discovered only recently.
During the whole of the year not one plant has been discovered in Australia of adequate horticultural value to be dedicated to you. So here I come after the event, which I hope, however, you will not interpret as a lack of devotion. If the gracious will of God will grant me another year of life, your next birthday will be remembered by me in a special way!

With the long distance I easily lose track of European affairs, which is understandable, but can only be excused because of the error concerning the date of your beautiful feast-day. The whole year has been so overloaded with extra work, that I have rarely found the time for quiet thought.

apart from the enormous correspondence, made so much extra work, as I also have to administer and enlarge the herbarium, that I am really completely exhausted mentally. And now comes a new "Royal Commission for vegetable industries" to investigate the rural conditions (between us) of the Colonies already rather depressed through borrowing. Such a year of work I have never had in my always active life!
Now, my dear friend, let me close this letter in the hope, that divine Providence will permit you to continue your great work for higher culture and botany, in the midst of your growing family, in robust good health and serene happiness.
