Melbourne,
9/2/84.
The honorable Graham Berry, M.L.A.,
Chief Secretary.
Sir,
I have the honor to forward herewith an application addressed to me by Mr. Charles
French,
who is eager to fill the situation, which became vacant by the death of Mr. Charles
Groener. As for ten years Mr. French was engaged under me in the botanic Gardens,
I learnt to recognize his ability and zeal and general excellent character; and as
he has a very extensive knowledge of plants and an usual
aptitude for museum work (splendidly exemplified at the Melbourne International Exhibition)
he would be singularly fitted to perform the duties, which in the position rendered
vacant would devolve on him.

T. Wilson, Under Secretary, sent the file to M on 13 February, seeking further information:
'The Government Botanist is requested to state: —
(1) What were the precise duties respectively devolving on the late Mr Groener and
the other assistants whose services are paid for out of the vote Divn 13/2 Books Wages
&c
(2) What are the names, present duties, length of service and wages of Mr French and
the other persons now employed and paid out of the Incidental Vote of his Department.'
For M's reply, see M to T. Wilson, 14 February 1884.
I have the honor to be,
Sir, your obedient servant
Ferd. von Mueller.
