is from a footnote appended to a review of M's census of genera (B82.13.08) and his

-1. The reviews and summaries published in the journal are unsigned but are assumed
to be by Engler, the editor. The date is uncertain, but is unlikely to have been before
March 1883, when B83.03.04 was ready for distribution. The footnote follows
a table
reproducing M's 'Sequence of orders according to predominance' in B83.03.04, p. 144. It is introduced by 'Aus einer freundlichen brieflichen Mittheilung Baron Mueller's

On this occasion, I also share the following plant-geographical remarks
from a friendly letter from Baron Mueller
]
.
Since a true
Casuarius
ostrich (not Dromeio or Emu) and some birds of paradise are also to be found in the
north
-
east of Australia, there may also be found some things from the Dipterocarpaceae,
Ternstroemiaceae, Balsaminaceae and other families within Australian borders. Arctotideae
are represented here by
Cymbonotus
. Of Toddalieae we have here only a lot of
Acronychia
species and the genus
Halfordia
, which is closely related to
Skimmia
.
Celastrus
reaches its southern limit in Gippsland, also the family Menispermaceae, which is
absent from the already colder Tasmania, but where
Verbena officinalis
occurs.
Bulbine
also includes an endemic species in New Zealand, while
Arthrotaxis
is the representative genus of
Sequoia
in Tasmania. Caruel and I intend to make the Australian
Orobanche
independent as
0. australiana
. Several Indian plants have recently been identified by me in north
-
east Australia, such as
Lagerstroemia flos reginae
,
Desmodium reniforme
,
Emilia purpurea
,
Scirpus grossus
from the Sect. Enantophyllum
.
Of
Scaevola
we have one species in north
-
east Australia and M
r
Forrest's collection from north
-
west Australia contains the leaf of a plant which seems to me to belong to
Begonia
,
which is not surprising as some Begoniaceae also occur so near (Timor). Acanthaceae
we have in
2
species of
Justicia
as far as Spencers Gulf and as far as the lower Darling River in South Australia,
Acicalyptus
on Lord Howe Island that belongs to New South Wales, which in its vegetation has few
points of contact with New Zealand.
Dioscorea hastata
extends far extratropically down to the Swan River in Western Australia. Palms and
cycads are present in Central Australia in one species of each, but do not extend
far down into South Australia. Careful observations over many years have shown that,
despite the most recent species, the genus
Eucalyptus
must be reduced to about 120 species.

The specimen K215369 at Kew has a label by M reporting that it was collected between
the De Grey River and Lagrange Bay by Alexander Forrest in 1879. See also M to J Hooker,
