To the Marquis di Toverena,
Consul-General for Italy etc.
Sir,
I have the honor to transmit herewith a case of seeds, containing (fresh):
8 lb seeds of Himalian
2
Himalayan?
Pines ( , P. Webbiana, P. Venethiana,
3
Not in IPNI.
P. Gerardiana, P. Deodara, )
and 2 lb seeds of the gigantic (E. amygdalina var. regnans), as promised by me to be supplied for the extensive plantations of trees on the Roman Campagna.
I have still at some early occasion to furnish from the Himalias seeds fresh of the which is particularly valuable on account of its resinous nature for hygienic purposes.
The seeds now supplied will suffice to raise many 100,000 trees if at Tre Fontana and in other fever regions means are available for carefully raising plants from these seeds.
The variety regnans of Eucalyptus amygdalina is from the higher mountains regions of the Colony Victoria and will endure considerable frost , much more so than E. Globulus. For this reason and on account of its colossal height and the abundance of essential volatile oil in its barks, it is the most important tree that could be raised for sanitary purposes at Rome.
I hope that meanwhile also the American Pine seeds will have arrived at the royal City of Italy direct from Philadelphia according to my arrangements.
