Undated fragment. The translation is included within the text. A cross has been marked before the following items: 38, 36, 34, 32, 31, 30, 28, 27, 24, 23, 22, 16, 15, 14, 12, 10, 9, 7, 4.
Dating lists of Holtze specimens is difficult. Holtze often used the same number more than once, occasionally evidently for specimens he believed he had sent previously under the same number, but there are many for which the names do not match. The lists have been compared with the AVH records for M. Holtze collections at MEL. If a date is given for any of the specimens with that number, and those names are not identical with the names M assigned, then the nomenclature data in APNI are searched, and a broad match (to family) is considered sufficient to use that date as part of the analysis to estimate the date of the note. Some specimens are recorded as if collected jointly by J. Tenison Woods and Holtze in 1886 but this is a spurious attribution, indicating that these specimens were given to Tenison Woods by Holtze during his visit in that year.
Usable collecting dates, including information in notes 4, 7 and 8 below, indicate that the earliest the present item could have been sent is 1880. It is probable that the list accompanied M to M. Holtze, 4 April 1880 (in this edition as 80-04-04a), but the list is dated to April without that precision because in some other cases it seems that lists were not sent together with the related letter.
