This letter is clearly an answer to M to E. Ramsay, 30 January 1880. This sheet will have been included in a letter from M to Ferdinand von Krauss in
response to his question about the identity of the 'gavial'; see n. 4 to F. von Krauss to M, 13 December 1879. Although enclosures were not mentioned, it was probably included with M to F. von
Krauss, 16 February 1880.

My dear Baron
The only Crocodiles that I have seen from Australia are
Crocodilus
biporcatus
(Gray) and
Philas
(Tomistoma?)
Johnstonei
(Kr[)]
I have heard that the species from the Norman River
is distinct from that of Cardwell
and Eastern Queensland but although I have examined young specimen from Norman River,
Port Darwin,
Pt Essington,
Cooktown,
and Cardwell & the South East Coast of New Guinea — I have failed to find any difference
between them & believe them all to be of the same species, which is [I]
believe
Crocodilus biporcatus
