Sonntag 7/7/79

Es bieten sich an diesem Ruhetag, mein theurer Freund, einige Stunden für wissenschaftliche Correspondenz mit europäischen Freunden, u. so wende ich auch Ihnen nun ein Weilchen zu, zumal da in dieser Woche wieder die Monatspost abgehen wird. Es ist mir endlich gelungen ein Paar des rost farbenen Macropus laniger zu erlangen. Das Maaß des Männchens ist 7½ Fuss vom Kopf zum Schwanzende, also ziemlich so gross als angegeben von Waterhouse, u. es werden selten grössere Exemplare gefunden. Auch von Dromaius habe ich ein Paar besorgt, da es endlich gelang, die Beine dieses Riesenvogels zu conserviren. Mehr vielleicht werden Sie sich noch über eine schöne Sammlung von Neu Guinea Vögeln freuen, unter denen sich auch einige Paradiseae befinden, u. es möchte (freilich nicht unter letzterer Gruppe) vielleicht noch eine oder die andere Art darunter neu sein. obgleich der Marquis Salvadori wohl nicht viel in der Papuanischen Ornithologie zu beschreiben nachliess. Die Zahl der Arten ist 108! Freilich sind die Geldopfer für diese Thiere u. die grossen Macropus & Dromaia Bälge sehr hoch angelaufen, der Fracht nicht zu gedenken. Ich hoffe schon diese Woche diese wirklich kostbare Sendung an Freund Sonder spediren zu können. Das riesige Exemplar des ostaustral. Crocodils ist direct von Brisbane (Queensland) an Blackith & Co gesandt.

On this day of rest, my dear Friend, some hours present themselves for scientific correspondence with European friends and so I also now give you a moment, especially since the monthly mail will go off again this week. Finally I succeeded in obtaining a pair of rubiginous Macropus laniger. The measurement of the male is 7½ feet from head to the end of the tail, thus nearly as large as cited by Waterhouse, and larger specimens are rarely found. I have also acquired a pair of Dromaius, since finally there was success in preserving the legs of these giant birds. You will perhaps be more pleased still about a beautiful collection of New Guinea birds, among which are even some birds of paradise, and there may be perhaps one or the other species new among them (admittedly not among the latter group), although the Marquis Salvadori

probably did not leave much in Papuan ornithology to describe. The number of species is 108 ! It is true the sacrifice of money for these animals and the large Macropus & dromaia skins has mounted up very high, not to think of the freight. I hope to be able to ship this really valuable consignment to friend Sonder as early as this week. The huge specimen of the East-Australian crocodile is sent direct from Brisbane (Queensland) to Blackith & Co.
