Ich schreibe Ihnen diesmal, theurer u. gelehrter Freund, um Sie zu befragen, ob es in Ihrem Bereiche liegt, eine etwaige Sammlung von Longicornia coleoptera bearbeitet zu sehen, da selbstverständlich eine solche Bearbeitung nur von einem Specialisten vorgenommen

also über 200 Thaler) dafür gefordert. Vielleicht würde ich auch dies Opfer bringen und Ihnen die Sammlung zuwenden, aber es wäre doch eine zu bedeutende und unverhältnissmässige Ausgabe, wenn man nicht durch die Bekanntmachung von reichlich Neuen (ehe uns jemand zuvor kommt) etwas Ersatz hätte.

Es geht bald wieder allerlei an Sie ab, darunter einige schöne Ex. des Neuseeländisch. Nestor. Aus beigefügtem Briefe werden Sie aber ersehen, dass ein bedeutender Preis für unsere sogenannten Alligatoren bezahlt werden müsste (u. dann kommen noch die bedeutenden Fracht Unkosten bis Stuttgart dazu),

Ich habe mich recht gefreuet über die Zuneigung Seitens Sr. Excell. Staatsrath v. Regels der Gartenflora von 1878, welche ja in Ihrer Stadt erscheint. Den Pastor Dr. Bromby sah ich wohlgemuth vor einigen Tagen.

I am writing to you this time, dear and learned friend, to ask you whether it lies in your province to see worked up a future collection of longicorn coleoptera, since of course such a treatment can only [be] undertaken by a specialist, to whom the necessary material for comparison and the bibliographical means are available together. There is here a collection of about 300 species available for purchase, all Australian, of which about one hundred may be new.

The collection of longicorns was presumably that of Charles French Snr; see M to R. Owen, 30 October 1878.

However, a very considerable price (about £30, therefore over 200 Taler) is asked for it. Perhaps I would also make this sacrifice and procure the collection for you, but it would certainly be a very considerable and disproportionate expenditure, if there were not some compensation through the publication of plentiful new things (before anyone anticipates us).

French's collection apparently was refused by both Krauss and Owen. In an interview with Charles French published in the Leader (Melbourne), 22 February 1890, p. 38, it was reported that his longicorn beetle collection was in the Leyden Museum.

Soon all kinds of things go off to you again, among them some beautiful specimens of New Zealand Nestor. However, from the enclosed letter

you will see that a considerable price must be paid for our so-called alligator and then in addition still the considerable costs of freight to Stuttgart, and since the species is probably not different from the Ganges crocodile, specimens could be got much cheaper from India.
