Letter not found. The text given here is from 'Valuable botanical report', California farmer and journal of useful sciences, 24 December 1874, p. 180. The letter is dated to October 1874 as the latest likely date that it could have been sent to have been mentioned in this issue of the weekly newspaper. The same news item was inserted in the issue of 21 January 1875, p. 194.

M's 'Report of the Government Botanist for the year ending 30th June 1874' (B74.09.01) was printed in full in the newspaper, in six instalments under the series title 'Valuable botanical researches, and reports of the Australian region', starting with B75.04.01.
We are also greatly indebted to Professor Mueller for rare and valuable Seeds and Plants, which we duly prize, and shall care for and report upon, we must here add that the great labor and research that has been given by Prof. Meuller to his works and thus sent forth to the world in his valuable publications has done much to awaken attention to Australia in her wealth of Agriculture and Horticulture, and her Botanical Wonders, and thus reflecting great and deserved honors upon Professor Mueller also, as well as that country.]
