Melbourne bot. Garden
26/6/73.
Sir
I have the honor to transmit to you herewith such seeds of foresttrees as are available in the seeds magazine of the bot Garden at this moment, to which supply after further sorting others may yet be added, while also new supplies will gradually come in reciprocally. It is however not customary to keep seeds of these kinds in the store and placed aside unutilized, as most of them retain their vitality only for a very limited period and are therefore sown almost immediately after arrival. A considerable number of seedlings of forest trees, from seeds gradually sown for some months past or even before that time, are in one of the Nurseries of the botanic Garden.
I have the honor to be,
Sir, your obed. serv.
Ferd. von Mueller,
Direct. botan Garden.
The honorable the Minister of the Lands Department

On 27 June the Secretary for Agriculture, A. Wallis, minuted: 'I think it desirable that the seedling forest trees referred to by the Govt Botanist should this season be planted out in nursery rows, and for that object I would recommend their transfer to the State Nursery. By adopting the above course the greater part of them will become available for distribution during next season.' The Assistant Commissioner for Crown Lands and Survey, C. Hodgkinson, concurred on 30 June and ordered the seeds to be transferred accordingly.
