MS bears as a letterhead a miniature of the arms proposed by M following his being created a baron (see M to J. von Wächter, 8 October 1871 (in this edition as 71-10-08a)), very different from those eventually approved. Nehmen Sie, edler Herr, meinen Festgruss hin, wenn er auch spät an Sie gelangt. Möge das Jahr ein grosses geographisches werden!
Mr Alex. Forrest, der Bruder u Begleiter des Reisenden John Forrest, ist von seinem Ausflug ins Innere zurückgekehrt. Er drang östlich von Hampton Plains weiter vor, und wandte sich dann südlich nach der Israelit Bay. In diesen Richtungen fand er das Land dürr u nur kärglich mit Wasser versehen. Seine Specialkarte werde ich vielleicht schon mit nächster Post senden.
Mr Ernest Giles rüstet sich nun, um von dem mittleren Theil der neuen Telegraph-Linie nach Ostern ins westliche Innere vorzuschreitet, wozu die 2 nassen Jahre u die nun mögliche Anlehnung an die neuen Telegraph Stationen solche vortreffliche Gelegenheit geben. Ich denke er soll den Murchison Fluss erreichen.
Mr Charl. Harper will in nächster kühler Jahreszeit nach dem Termination Lake gehen vom De Grey River, wo er eine Rinderherde hat.
Es ist auffallend, wie undankbar sich Capt Koldewey gegen Sie benimmt, da er ja Ihnen Alles verdankt! Wie roh, Ihnen den persönlichen Muth gewissermassen absprechen zu wollen, selbst an den Nordpol Fahrten Theil zu nehmen. Sie, als erster Geograph der Zeit können doch Ihre edle Zeit besser verwerthen daheim für die genaue wissenschaftliche Durcharbeitung der neuen geographischen Errungenschaften der ganzen Erde zu dieser Zeit. Es hindert ja Ihr Plan nicht den Capt Koldewey, auch sein Projekt auszuführen. Mag er es immerhin zu Land längs Ost-Grönland versuchen zum Pol zu gelangen. Das grosse landlose Meer zwischen Spitzbergen u Nova Zembla bildet sicher weniger Treibeis, als die Meerestheile nahe arctischen Festlandes.

He penetrated further eastwards from Hampton Plains, then turned south to Israelite Bay. He found the land in this direction to be arid and with only a scanty water supply. I shall perhaps send his special map already with the next mail.
Mr Ernest Giles is making preparations to proceed from the central part of the new telegraph line into the western interior after Easter; two wet years and the now available support from the new telegraph stations provide excellent conditions for this. I think he should be able to reach the Murchison River.

It is remarkable how ungratefully Captain Koldewey behaves towards you , considering that he owes you everything! How rude for wanting, so to speak, to deny your personal courage, because you yourself do not accompany the North Pole expeditions. You, as the first geographer of our time, have better things to do at home with your precious time, working for the exact scientific treatment of all the new geographic attainments of the whole earth at this time. After all, your plan does not prevent Captain Koldewey from carrying out his project. Let him attempt, anyway, to reach the Pole overland along eastern Greenland. The great landless ocean between Spitzbergen and Novaya Zemlya probably forms less drift ice than the stretches of ocean near the arctic mainland.
