Seit langer Zeit, edler Freund, habe ich keine so genussreiche Stunde verlebt, als diesen Abend, wie ich Ihre Abhandlung über die Moa-Jäger durchlas. Manches darin war mir ganz neu, u dazu haben Sie Ihr wohlgeordnetes Thema in eine anmuthige Sprache gekleidet.

Welch einen beneidenswerthen Wirkungskreis haben Sie in Neu-Seeland, wo die reiche Natur, die grossartige Gebirgsformation, das Eigenthümliche seiner menschlichen Bewohner, seiner Thiere u Vegetation zu so vielfachen Betrachtungen Anlass giebt. Neu-Seeland muss wohl nur der Rest eines grossen Insellandes sein; wenn wir dies annehmen erklärt sich manches Räthselhafte.

Eine wichtige Bemerkung über die Pflanzen verdient weitere Berücksichtigung, nämlich, dass die des Hochlands mannichfach

denen Australiens gleich oder ähnlich sind, was auf eine gleiche Schöpfung schliessen lässt, während die Pflanzen des Flachlands sich schroff in Unähnlichkeit entgegenstehen. Sollte es für Ihre vergleichenden Studien von irgend einer Wichtigkeit sein, so will ich Ihnen eine Liste derjenigen Hochlandspflanzen liefern, welche beiden Ländern gemeinsam sind. ) hier ähnliche Arten haben, wird Ihnen bekannt sein. Ich denke mir, dass die Alpen Vegetation Australiens u Neu Seelands gleichen geologischen Ursprungs ist u vielleicht auch chronologisch dieselbe. Ist es nicht auch möglich, dass die Vernichteten Moa Jäger noch in den ursprünglich unterjochten Chatham-Insulanern überlebende Stam Genossen haben? Der Vergleich einer Reihe Schädel liesse dies feststellen, u so bietet sich auch in soweit für den jungen Travers ein reiches Erforschungsfeld. Erlauben Sie mir auch zu bemerken, dass derselbe vielleicht aus den Sagen der noch überlebenden Chathamier auf die Moa Jäger Licht werfen könnte. Vielleicht, freilich, sind die letzteren australischen Ursprungs, trotz dessen dass die belebte Natur beider Länder nun so verschieden ist.

Das hastige Einathmen der Luft der Moas nach starkem Lauf u die Wendung gegen den Wind ist, glaube ich, allen Struthionidea eigen u würde daher für die ethnologische Erkundung der Moa Zeit Seitens der ältesten oder jetzigen Neuseeländer von keinem Werthe sein. Die specielle Organisation der Respirations Organe dieser Vögel bedingt dieses ihr Verhalten.

Es gebricht mir an Zeit, diese merkwürdigen Forschungen, mit welchen Sie die Wissenschaft bereichern, weiter gerade

jetzt zu erörtern. Doch hätte ich gern manches mit Ihnen besprochen seit Jahren, wäre ich nicht nur durch absolute Armuth entmuthigt, sondern auch durch das Betragen meiner irregeleiteten Obern, durch die Verfolgung eines Theils der Presse u durch den Neid niedriger Verleumder in meinem Wirken so behindert, dass es mir oft ganz an Stärke u Muth gebricht. Ich bin nun 45 Jahre, habe 24 Jahre in Australien unausgesetzt gearbeitet, vor 31 Jahren meine Pflanzen Forschungen begonnen, habe colossal arbeiten müssen, da es an Sammlungen u Bibliotheken viel gebrach, musste wenigstens die Hälfte des kärglichen Gehalts (£600 pro anno) also £300 für Reisen, Bücher, Instrumente, ausländischen Verkehr u die Hospitalität der Anstalt u.s.w. opfern, was mir £300 liess gerade genug um das Leben in diesem theuren Lande u in meiner Stellung als Departements Chef zu fristen. An häusliches Leben konnte selbstverständlich unter solchen Verhältnissen nicht gedacht werden, meine Gesundheit schwankt, u nun, spät im Leben, versucht man mich völlig so gar aus meiner Directur des Gartens u somit aus meiner Schöpfung zu drängen, was auch bis zu einem gewissen Grade wenigstens temporär gelungen ist. Dies mag es Ihnen, Bester, erklären, warum ich manchmal im Schreiben wortkarg war u Ihren Schwiegervater fast nie sehe. Ich verliere so viel Zeit durch die steten Verfolgungen, dass mir zu Besuchen keine Ruhe bleibt, doch behalte ich Sie stets in ehrendem u dankendem Andenken.

Not for a long time, noble friend, have I had such a pleasurable hour as this evening, when I read your paper on the Moa hunters.

It would appear that Haast had sent M a pre-publication copy of his presidential address read to the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury on 1 March 1871, but not published until the following year (Haast (1872)).

Several things in it were completely new to me and, to add to it, your well-structured theme is presented in elegant language.

What an enviable field of activities you have in New Zealand, where the riches of nature, the grandiose formations of the mountain ranges, the peculiarity of its human inhabitants, its animals and vegetation give rise to so many varied considerations. New Zealand must, I suppose, be but the remnant of an island continent; this hypothesis would explain much that is puzzling.

An important remark on the plants deserves further consideration, this being that those of the highlands are frequently the same as or similar to those in Australia, which would lead us to conclude a similar creation, while the plants of the lowlands oppose each other in blunt dissimilarity. I can make you a list of those highland plants that are common to both countries, if this should be of any importance for your comparative studies. That none of New Zealand's trees occur in Australia, and only very few (such as

) have similar species here, is no doubt known to you. I imagine that the alpine vegetation of New Zealand and Australia has the same origin geologically and perhaps also chronologically. Is it not also possible that the extinct Moa hunters still have tribal relatives in the originally subjected Chatham Islanders ? The comparison of a series of skulls should determine this, so in this also a rich field for research is open to young Travers.

Henry Travers made a second trip to the Chatham Islands during the southern spring/summer season of 1871-2.

Permit me to remark also that he could perhaps throw light on the Moa hunters from the folklore of the Chatham Islanders. Perhaps, though, the first are even of Australian origin, in spite of all living nature in the two countries being so different today.

The rapid breathing in of air by the Moas after hard running and the turning against the wind is, I believe, common to all Struthionidea and would therefore be of no value for the ethnological investigation of the Moa time of the oldest or the current New Zealanders.

Haast (1872), p. 77, had referred to a Maori proverb about 'wind-eating moa' as one of the very few indications that the Maori had first-hand knowledge of these birds.

The specialized organisation of the respiratory organs of these birds determines their behaviour.

I lack the time to comment further right now on these remarkable researches with which you enrich science. But there is much that I should have liked to have discussed with you for years, if I were not only so discouraged by my absolute poverty, but also so obstructed in my work through the behaviour of my misguided superiors, through the persecution by a section of the press, and through the envy of my calumniators, that I am often completely lacking in strength and courage.
