Würden Sie mir die Gefälligkeit erweisen, verehrter Herr Professor, das beigefügt Polypodium mit P. lanceola zu vergleichen, da Sie wohl Zugang haben zu der Sammlung Ihres verstorbenen Freundes Prof Mettenius. Wahrscheinlich wird sich die Übereinstimmung unserer Pflanze mit der von Neu-Caledonien herausstellen.

Would you do me the kindness, respected Professor, to compare the enclosed Polypodium with P. lanceola, because you probably have access to the collection of your late friend Professor Mettenius. The correspondence of our plant with that of New Caledonia will probably come to light.

See B70.12.03, p.120, where M used lanceola, but stated that he had not himself compared a specimen with one from New Caledonia, and gave a provisional name P. simplicissimum if it proved to be distinct. Later, in B71.12.03, p. 156, he recognised P. simplicissimum; on the authority of M. Kuhn to M, 2 August 1871. See also B89.12.03, p. 233, where he gave 'F. v. M' as the authority for the name in W. Hooker & Baker (1874), p. 513.
