Hiermit, verehrter Herr Professor, sende ich Ihnen den ersten Theil des Journals von Mr Forrest, die andere Hälfte ist noch nicht abgedruckt u muss Ihnen mit nächster Monats-Post gesandt werden. Aus Zeitmangel habe ich erst einige wenige der (nicht zahlreichen) begüterten Deutschen persönlich um einen Beitrag zum Nordfahrfond ansprechen können. So wird also meine Remisse erst mit nächster Post kommen. Inzwischen gebe ich die Namen.

Ich will hoffen, dass es mir möglich sein wird, diese Summe zu verdoppeln, obgleich die Deutschen hier viel weniger zahlreich sind als in Adelaide.
Schon im vorigen Monatsbrief schlug ich Ihnen vor, ein Circular an die Consuln Norddeutschlands im Ausland zu richten. Dadurch würden Sie jedenfalls vielseitige Beiträge ohne Mühe erlangen. Für Melbourne werde ich freilich schon Alles gethan haben.
Ich habe einen Neuen Aufruf erlassen, um die Aussendung von Mr Forrest wiederum zu bewirken, u. sende Ihnen einen Abdruck dessen, das ich über diese Sache öffentlich sagte.

the other half has not been printed yet and will have to be sent to you with next month's mail. Owing to lack of time I have only been able to ask a few of the (not numerous) well-to-do Germans here in person for a contribution towards the North Pole Fund.

A fund instituted by Petermann to support German exploring expeditions to the North Pole and the Arctic region.
My remittance will therefore not come until next month's mail. In the meantime I give you the names:

I hope to be able to double this sum, even though the Germans here are far less numerous than in Adelaide.
Already in last month's letter I suggested to send a circular to the Consuls of North Germany.

In this fashion you would be able to obtain contributions from all directions without any trouble. I shall already have done everything in Melbourne, though.
I have made a new appeal to effect another expedition by Mr Forrest and send you a print of what I said publicly in the matter.

The extract of M to F. Barlee, 7 September 1869, printed in Perth Gazette and West Australian times, 24 September 1869 p. 3, might just have been available to M when he wrote to Petermann. M had written to the WA Surveyor General with the same proposal (M to J. Roe, 6 September 1869 (in the edition as 69-09-06d)), but it was printed too late to have been included in the letter to Petermann, see Inquirer and commercial news, 6 October 1869 (B69.10.02). No earlier printed mention of M's proposal to send Forrest out again in 1870 has been found.

M made the same request in an earlier letter; see M to A. Petermann, 17 July 1896. He was probably referring to the map of the Australian continent, scale 1 : 10000000, included in the 1868 volume of Petermann’s journal (Plate 21), under the heading ‘Australien.
