Letter not found. The text given here is a translation from the Tanunda Deutsche Zeitung published in the South Australian advertiser (Adelaide), 18 October 1869, p. 2. It is introduced by 'The approaching departure of the Rev. Dr. Meucke from this colony is deeply regretted by his numerous friends, and particularly by the members of his congregation. … [He] will depart about the middle of November for Melbourne, where already a hearty welcome is waiting for him. Amongst others, Dr. F. von Mueler, Director of the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne, writes—'.
A similar report, including a paraphrase of M's text quoted here and also acknowledging the Tanunda paper as the source, was published in the Evening journal (Adelaide), 16 October 1869, p. 2.
It is a joyful thought to me that you have formed the idea to spend the evening of your active life in this colony, where, I trust, if I should not die soon, to meet you often. May this evening be long and undisturbed, in country retirement and independence, fruitfully devoted to science, without the disturbances of public life.
