M went to Queenscliff Vic at the end of July, from where he wrote from 25 July to several correspondents announcing that he was at Queenscliff, 'withdrawn … into rural tranquility' (M to V. von Martius, 25 July 1867), 'seeking restoration of my dwindled strength' (M to E. Fenzl, 26 July 1867), 'under oceanic breezes' (M to J. Hooker, 27 July 1867 (in this edition as 67-07-27a)). He worked up the Epacrideae there, and in M to G. Bentham 26 September 1867, written from Queenscliff, gave a summary of his views on the number of genera. He then left for Albany WA per RMSS Geelong on 28 September 1867 (Argus, 30 September 1867, p. 4).
