Theuerer Herr College und Freund.

Ich bin es mir bewusst, tief in Ihrer Schuld zu stehen für die gütige Übersendung vortrefflicher spanischer Pflanzen, die als Belege für Ihr u Dr. Willkomms Werk einen bleibenden Werth in unserm botanischen Staatsmuseum haben werden. Mehrfache Umstände veranlassten die Verzögerung einer Gegengabe, theils officielle Reisen, theils schwankende Gesundheit, theils Überhäufung von drängenden Departements-Arbeiten, theils wieder literarische Verpfichtungen. So ist es dann auch gekommen, dass ich Ihnen für die Übersendung von mehreren Schriften u Samensammlungen bisher meinen Dank noch nicht abstattete, den Sie jetzt verspätet entgegen nehmen wollen. Bei dieser Gelegenheit habe ich Ihnen nun aber doch mitzutheilen, dass ich mit dem Schiff "Anglesey" eine Kiste mit trocknen Pflanzen an Sie absandte, durch meinen Londoner Agenten Will. Es sind freilich nicht gerade viel Seltenheiten darunter, indessen werden Ihnen die Species, welche Ihre Sammlung schon besitzt, doch zum Austausch willkommen sein. Jetzt nachdem ich in ein neues Haus gezogen u mehr Räumlichkeit für Arbeiten habe, denke ich aus unserer wirklich enormen Sammlung manches Schöne u Selten für Ihre Anstalt aufsuchen zu können, denn ich würde stolz darauf sein, könnte ich Dännemark seinen grossen Wallich ersetzen. Ich habe auch 2 Kisten mit Insekten für Ihr Museum hinzugefügt; eine Anzahl der Arten dieses kleinen Beitrages, ist noch nicht beschrieben. Recht gern werde ich anderweitige Sammlungen folgen lassen, zumal wenn Ihre Regierung es veranlassen möchte, wie es gnädig die Regierung von Russland, Frankreich u. Italien gethan, dass diese wissenschaftl Sendungen durch Ihren Consul oder Gesandten von London aus weiter befördert werden dürfen. Ich habe nämlich keine Sicherheit, dass in London durch das Öffnen der Kisten am Customhaus nicht Verletzung u Verluste entstehen, wenn nicht officielle Obhut es verhindert; auch kann ich mich nicht ganz auf die prompte Weiterbeförderung durch Agenten verlassen.

Bitten möchte ich, dem edlen Herrn Conferenzrath Rafn meinen Gruss entbieten zu wollen, u zu erfragen, ob meine

peruanischen antiquen Goldkleinodien, welche ich durch gütige Vermittlung des Schwagers unseres Gouverneurs u. Sr. Excellenz Ihres Gesandten in London pr "Great Britain" übersandte, willkommen waren. Mit der Post sandte ich Ihnen den 3 Band meines Werks Fragm. phyt. Austr, auch alle Bände dieses Werkes u den 1st der Flora von Victoria für Ihre Königl. Bibliothek. Selbige waren an Ihren Consul in London adressirt, welcher Herr gewiss nicht abgeneigt gewesen, selbige weiterzufördern. Es gebricht uns leider ja an einer directen Buchpost mit Dänemark.

Mit einer ziemlichen Anzahl der Bände der Flora Danica bevor mir und mit reichen Sammlungen schleswig holsteinischer Pflanzen unter meinen Augen denke ich noch manchmal an meine Excursionen in Schleswig zurück, wo ich meine Knabenjahre verlebte. Ich bleibe gern mit Ihrem Lande in reger Verbindung, u wenn ich Ihren wissenschaftl Anstalten u Gelehrten hülfreich sein kann, so gebieten Sie frei über meine Dienste.

Willkomm & J. Lange (1862-80). MEL has large quantities of Willkomm plants from Spain, many of them, at least, evidently acquired from Lange.

will be of permanent value to our State Botanical Museum. Several circumstances caused the delay of a reciprocal consignment, partly official journeys, partly faltering health, partly an overload of pressing departmental work, partly literary obligations again. It also so happens that till now I have not yet thanked you for the sending of several papers and collections of seeds, which you will now kindly accept belatedly. However, I now take this opportunity to inform you that I have sent you a box with dried plants by the ship "Anglesey" through my London agents William Pamplin Esq.

Admittedly there are just not many rarities among them, however, the species that are already in your collection will indeed be acceptable for exchange. After I have moved into a new house and have more room for working, I am thinking to be able to search for many pretty items and rarities for your institution from our really enormous collection, as I would be proud if I could replace the great Wallich for Denmark. I also have enclosed two boxes with insects for your museum; a number of the species of this small contribution are not yet described. I would very pleased to have other collections follow, especially if your Government would arrange that scientific consignments may be forwarded from London through your consul or ambassador as the governments of Russia, France and Italy have done. I have no assurance that damage and loss do not arise in the opening of boxes at the customs-office in London where this is not prevented by official care, nor can I rely on them being forwarded promptly by agents.

I would like to ask that you pass on my regards to the noble Counsellor Rafn, and that you enquire whether my antique Peruvian gold treasures, transmitted by the "Great Britain" through the kind agency of our Governor's brother-in-law and His Excellency, your ambassador in London, were pleasing.

and a rich collection of Schleswig-Holstein plants before me, I still think back at times to my excursions in Schleswig, where I spent my boyhood.

I had been thinking of visiting Europe on holidays, but the voyage has now been postponed for an indefinite period.

The second volume of the "Plants of Victoria"

The second volume was never completed, although the first five sheets (40 pages) were printed; see B63.13.06.

and the 4th volume of the Fragmenta are in the press and will be transmitted to you as soon as they are completed.

A collection of seeds from 1863 is also enclosed for your Gardens. May I claim your kind services for the forwarding of the enclosed parcels to the Continent?

Our friend Dr W. Sonder in Hamburg will gladly arrange the further looking after of those packets that cannot easily be forwarded by your institution.
