ermuthigen.

This time, highly esteemed Sir, you will receive algae from several parts of the coast
of
South Australia
, collected by Mr O'Halloran, son of Major O'Halloran, with whom I was acquainted
in the middle of this century at that time in South Australia. On account of my friendship
with his father, this gentleman exerted himself to procure particularly algae from
the coast of South Australia, especially also from the strand west of Spencers Gulf.
Although many of the species are probably known, yet we must regard them useful on
account of studies for the geographical distribution.
Would it be possible to have a simple list of names of all the algae of Australia
published, as now they have gradually become known for the various colonies, similar
to the enumeration in the 11th volume of the
Fragmenta
,
or like I did in the
Census
for the vascular plants of Australia with geographical indications? I could encourage
more algae collecting here by distribution of such a list.

No such list has been found. There is a set of unpublished MS
S 'A census of Australian Cryptogams' at MEL (RB MSS 772) that includes a bundle of Algae names. It is undated but estimated as 'ca. 1885'. This is probably
the MS that M expected to publish in 1883 as the 'Evasculares for the 3rd part of the
Census
of plant species of Australia' (M to J. Agardh, 12 August 1882), although it might also have been intended as a supplement for the planned twelfth
volume of Fragmenta, as in M to J. Agardh, 15 June 1885 (In this edition as 85-06-15a) reports that 'Unfortunately the
printing
of the Supplement list of Australian Evasculares has still not begun for the 12th
volume of the Fragmenta'. The emphasis on 'printing' implies that the text was ready. Only the first fascicle
of vol. 12 was issued (B82.12.03).
