The latest know letter to Thiselton-Dyer preceding this one was dated 31 May 1893, and is not concerned with the matters discussed in the present letter.
I forgot to mention, that the larger plant, taken in the “Australian” for Kew by Mr and Mrs Markes may possibly not be a Verticordia, but perhaps a Melaleuca; the smaller however must be either V. oculata or V. grandis; this smaller one however is in so feeble a state, that it may perish on the way.

Annotated beneath the postscript by William Watson: Only one plant has been recd. at Kew. It arrived quite dead. / W.W. The left margin of the annotation is marked by a double line in red pencil.
Like in some other myrtaceous plants, the oildots in the leaves of the larger plant are few ; still they are there and comparatively large and often only developed near the upper end of the leaves. But supposed, the large plant prove not a true Verticordia, when coming into flower, it will turn out likely new for Kew . I trust, you will have a friendly word for Mr & Mrs Markes.
With best greeting
Ferd von Mueller
I had just a very touching letter from Casimir D.C.

Letter not found. The letter doubtless concerned the death of de Candolle’s father, Alphonse de Candolle, who died on 4 April 1893. M gave a memorial address at the meeting of the Field Naturalists’ Club of Victoria on 8 May 1893 (Victorian Naturalist, vol. 10, p. 18); see B93.06.04, reprinted B93.10.01.
