Die letzte wöchentliche Post brachte mir, geehrter Herr Dr. Nordstedt, die 10 Probe
Abdrücke der ersten Decade Australischer Characeen, und habe ich mich über die schöne
Ausführung recht gefreuet. Ich habe daher mit dieser Post
zehn
£ durch Anweisung auf das Post Bureau gesandt in Lund, und wenn die Decade mich fertig
erreicht in der besprochenen Anzahl von Abdrücken, werde ich weitere Zahlung machen,
da ich dann Ihre zweite Quitung von £10 verwerthen kann. Wie ich schon in meinem letzten
Brief gesagt, möchte ich darauf dringen, dass
jede Art nur durch eine Platte
illustrirt wird, denn wenn wir auf
Varietäten
eingehen mit besonderen Platten, dann würden
meine Mittel
hier für die Vollendung der Australischen Arten ganz
unzulänglich
sein, und die Studirenden würden sogar confus werden. Ich habe etwa 800 Arten von
Austr. Phanerogamen hier illustrirt in meinen Werken, und
nie 2 Platten einer Art
gewidmet, aber auch nie
2 Arten auf eine Platte
gebracht. Sie werden zugestehen, es sei wünschenswerth, dass also auch andere Werke,
bei welchen mein Departement betheiligt ist, in derselben Weise durchgeführt werden.
Ich möchte Sie daher ganz besonders ersuchen,
eine
der beiden Platten von
eingehen zu lassen, und
eine andere Art dafür zu substituiren
. Da aber diese zweite Platte schon gedruckt ist, will ich
extra
dafür bezahlen. Noch möchte ich bemerken, dass es doch wohl mir
gerecht wäre
, wenn ich nicht ganz und gar aus der Autorität von Arten in dem Werke ausgeschlossen
würde, da ich ja z.B. doch schon 1848 (publicirt erst 1852) den Arten-Namen
myriophylla
gab, der Priorität hat; wenn Sie also diese Art noch gleich in die erste Decade aufnehmen
könnten, so würde mich dies recht
freuen
. Bedenken Sie, dass ich, was Sie in der Vorrede hervorheben könnten, doch eigentlich
der
Einzige
gewesen bin, der Characeen in Australien extensive sammelte oder herbeischaffte,
und dass sich diese meine Sammelzeit und Beobachtungszeit über 44 Jahre in Australien
ununterbrochen erstreckte.

The last weekly mail brought me, esteemed Dr Nordstedt, the 10 proof impressions of
the first Decade of Australian Characeae,
and I am very pleased about the fine execution. I have therefore sent
ten
£ with this mail by postal note on the Post Office in Lund and when the Decade reaches
me complete in the arranged number of impressions, I will make further payment because
I can then utilize your second receipt of £10. As I already said in my last letter,
I would like to insist that
each species
is illustrated
only on one plate
, because if we go into
varieties
with special plates, then
my funds
here for the completion of the Australian species would be quite
insufficient
and students would even become confused.
I have illustrated about 800 species of Australian phanerogams here in my works,
and
never
devoted
2 plates to a species
; but also never
brought 2 species on to a plate
. You will concede it is desirable therefore that other works in which my department
is involved are also carried out in
the same
manner.
Therefore I would quite particularly request you to drop off one of the two plates
of
and
to substitute another species for it
, but because this second plate is already printed, I will pay
extra
for it. Moreover I would like to remark that it surely
would be just
to me, if I was not totally excluded from the authority of species in the work, because
I certainly for example as early as 1848 (published only in 1852) gave the species
name myriophylla,
which has priority; therefore if you can admit this species still in the first Decade,
this would
please
me very much. Consider that I have certainly really been
the only one
, who extensively collected or got Characeae in Australia, which you could stress
in the preface, and that my time of collecting and observation stretched uninterruptedly
over 44 years in Australia.
