Es ist recht erfreulich, geehrter Herr Doctor, dass Ihre Monographie der Characeen Australiens so gut vorwärts schreitet. Seien Sie so gut, mir quitirte Rechnungen, nach der Form, welche der Rechnungsführer meines Departments beifügt, zu senden, da ich nicht Quitungen über £10 jedesmal an die Schatzkammer der Regierung senden kann. Wenn immer zum Werth von £10 fertig ist, können Sie eine Quitung (nicht blosse Rechnung) ausstellen, wenn auch die Abdrücke noch nicht abgesandt werden können. Ich passe denn solche Quitungen (on the treasury of the Government here), und erhalte nach einigen Tagen das Geld, welches dann durch Post-Order an Lund für Sie dort zahlbar wird als durch meine Post-Order gesandt.
Ihre Liste der 1st Decade giebt nur 8 Arten und eine Varietät. Ich muss aber bemerken, dass Varietäten nicht als vollzählige Platten aufgenommen werden können, denn wenn Varietäten (ich nahm den Ausdruck “subspecies” nie an. Ich bin kein ächter Darwinianer) als vollgültig aufgenommen würden, dann würde das Buch indefinitive ausgedehnt werden, wofür ich nicht die hinlänglichen Geld- Mittel habe. Ich muss daher rathen die var. subebracteata nicht aufzunehmen, und statt dessen eine zweifellos selbstständige Art zu geben. Dann fehlt auch noch ausser der neunten die 10te Species die zehnte Art. Aus Gerechtigkeit zu mir werden Sie gewiss die wenigen Namen neuer Arten, welche ich selbst gegeben , beibehalten.

It is very pleasing, esteemed Doctor, that your monograph of the Characeae of Australia is moving forward so well.

Nordstedt (1891), the only Decade published.
Be so good as to send me receipted bills, according to the form that the accountant of my department encloses, because I can not send receipts over £10 each time to the treasury of the government. Whenever an amount of £10 is ready , you can make out a receipt (not merely an account), even if the printings cannot yet be sent off. I shall then pass such receipts (on the treasury of the Government here), and receive the money after a few days, which then becomes payable for you there by postal order at Lund as sent by my postal order.
Your list of the first decade gives only eight species and one variety. However, I must remark that varieties cannot be accepted as complete plates, since if varieties (I never accepted the expression "subspecies". I am no genuine Darwinian) were to be accepted as fully valid , then the book would be indefinitely extended , for which I do not have sufficient financial means . I must therefor advise not to accept the variety subebracteata, and instead of that to give an undoubtedly independent species.

As published, plate 9 was described as a subspecies of the species of plate 8, Chara leptopitys. None of the plates were of species named by Braun using M's herbarium names.
Then on top of that the tenth species besides the ninth is missing.

Plate 10 was Chara scoparia β muelleri, named by Braun.
Out of justice to me you will certainly retain the few names of new species that I myself gave .
